Does anyone have experience launching from Whalers cove? Want to try a new spot. Headed down to Monterey next month. Looking for safety tips and general ideas of where to drop a jig for ground fish. Thanks for reading!!!

Whalers cove is in a protected area! Point Lobos State Reserve Park. If you didn't know that already. We used to drop in on the south side of  Monastery Beach and paddle north towards Carmel to fish. Make sure you check the regs for the protected areas if you go that way.

The newer Marine Protected areas for the most part allow transit thru them with fishing equipment and catch as long as said equip is stowed while in the protected area.

However the Pt Lobos / Whalers cove (if I remember correctly) strictly prohibits that.

Also unless things have changed there's a limited number of divers allowed in at any given time, not sure if the same holds true of just launches.

All this is from memory and is old info., but I'd get some definite up to date info before I persued the idea.

I read that whole thread and didn't see anything to contradict what I said, there were comments about passing thru reserves with fish and landing near Pt Lobos but not at the Pt Lobos launch/(Whalers Cove ramp). But I could a missed it.

What I was told verbally while there in 1985 was that we could not launch with spearguns even if we were going to dive way outside the reserve.  After reviewing regs say 10 yrs ago kayak related instead of the inflatable we had in 85, I found that the rule was still in effect and dropped the idea.

Looks like nothing has changed.

Below is from the Pt Lobos website, today, and the link to it.

7. No fishing equipment or collecting tools are permitted in the Reserve. All animals, plants, and natural features in the Reserve are fully protected.

It seems to me that the consensus in that previous thread was that that is not enforced and almost certainly is not enforceable.

Just offering up the actual current written rule,

as for whether it's enforced or is enforceable, that's something I wouldn't be willing to check out by breaking it.

But that's just me.
