Black, ab @ the Cape

Slept in and headed over to the Cape right at low tide this morning.  Beautiful day over there as the rain had just headed inland.  The water was awesome with blue and green lines near shore.  I headed out through some favorite low tide chanels and spearfished for an hour or so while also looking for a decent ab.  Never got a good shot at the few snapper and grassy's I saw, grabbed a 8.75" ab, and hopped up on a rock to fish hook and line and take a few photos.  Hooked up what I think was the snapper I never got a good shot at - went about 3.5#.  CAN NOT wait to rockfish from my yak in 9 days or so...   

Awesome main rock island along inner edge of main chanel (10-12' deep) is accessible at low tide by wading.  It's nice to haul your stuff on the yak.   

That's a beautiful spot you got up there.

Nice pictures, thanks for sharing.  It looks like a great spot except for all the people!  How do you cope with the crowd?  Is this your Cape Mendocino spot?

Is this your Cape Mendocino spot?

Frank:  I have lots of shore spots over there and along the northern Lost Coast where I can always grab an ab or fish from the rocks with nice results, but the "off the hook" fishing action is a mile offshore.  This particular spot is really great access - about 40 yards and a 15' descent to the water from the truck.  The swell was a bit high for offshore fishing yesterday (8-9'), but there wasn't much wind.  I can't stress this enough:  the forecast and conditions must be almost perfect to launch over there, and even then it can get hairy quick.  What will likely happen this Summer will be that I'll see a forecast like "Variable wind to 5 knots...  swell 2-4 feet", I'll put up a hookup post, people may make a trip and head over the hill with me, and it may be blown out!  But we'll have a backup plan...
