I've heard about Arnel. He's a famous fisherman. Who's this Allen character ?????

Is the older one on the right or the left?
I'd ask which one is dad, but apparently they both are.

Mike Baxter, Fish Rap: Flat swell bad for surfers, good for cliff anglers

Summer is in full swing in Santa Cruz and the Monterey Bay. The weather is nice on the beach with calm ocean swells and traditional Northwest winds. Warm water and flat swells have promoted a good bite for rockfish and halibut, and salmon fishing ended with a bang. The wind has kept boats off the albacore grounds. Boat and beach anglers alike are scoring fish in the bay right now.

Recreational salmon fishing closed from Pigeon Point to Point Sur last Saturday and it ended with great scores. The final day of salmon fishing had nets flying and fish hitting the decks as anglers were blessed with salmon. Miss Beth hosted a salmon trip on the final day and reported five salmon in 120 feet of water outside Santa Cruz. Recreational salmon season remains open above Pigeon Point to Point Arena and many salmon are being caught from Half Moon Bay to Bodega. This bodes well for the commercial season that will start Aug. 1 from Pigeon Point to Point Arena.

The flat swell has left surfers on the beach and ground-fish anglers catching fish as the calm water increases catches. The recent shark encounter has left a few smaller craft off the water, but cliff anglers have been catching grass cod, sea trout and cabezon from the cliffs. Boat anglers are doing well on rockfish and lingcod with the normal rule in place: The further you go up the coast or to less impacted spots, the better the catch has been.

Kris Victorino, aboard the Legacy, reported: “We had great action on lingcod at New Year’s Island on our last full day trip with 30 lings being caught up to 16 pounds; live bait was the hot ticket.”

Capitola has been kicking out some halibut and striped bass. Ed Burrell was excited to report: “We weighed in a 30-pound halibut on a rental skiff today caught at the mile reef on squid, there are small striped bass and halibut being caught from the wharf as the fish chase schools of anchovies.” Anglers drifting live bait and trolling for halibut have been successful from the Mile Buoy down to New Brighton. Beach anglers have also been catching striped bass along the beaches of Aptos.

The weather forecast in the bay is a leisure 10 knots out of the west that will probably turn to white caps in the afternoon. The offshore forecast is still blustery with 15 to 25 knots of wind predicted out of the northwest. The high winds offshore has kept the albacore enthusiasts off the tuna grounds. We are all hoping the weather will calm down for a shot at more albacore.

This weekend’s top picks are rockfish and lingcod at local reefs and up the coast, drifting live bait for halibut, and casting for striped bass from the beaches. I hope you get out for a fish.

Mike Baxter is filling in for Allen Bushnell, who will return next week.
