Cindy C, Cindy S...blondes are all the same!  :smt044 (I can say that now that I'm gray!)

I also had LASIK several years ago, and it is the BOMB! Just be sure to use sunglasses faithfully.

Will sun ruin the operation? Are your eyes really succeptable to damage or something? I wear glasses/ contacts and would love to get rid of 'em someday.

Congrats James!!

No, but your eyes get really sensitive to light and dry out easily in the beginning. The drying-out part can be damaging before your eyes are healed so adhering to the intricate schedule of eyedrops is a must.

Having someone cut your corneas is almost as chilling as drilling holes in your kayak, but the end result is well worth it!  :smt002

I wore glasses since the 4th grade and they just kept getting thicker before I decided on having the procedure.  It's been 3 years for me now and I wish I had the surgery done sooner.  Modern medicine is amazing with what it can do.  For you lurkers, if you want to "see" the procedure there's a tape on You Tube.

James, follow your post-op instructions and you should be just fine.  The eye drops are refreshing as well as it helps the healing process.  I did find my post-op sleeping goggles on the floor after the 2nd night so I would recommend that you use the eye protection that you tape in place if you don't already have them.  The halos and star bursts went away for me after about a month and everything else is going great.  You are entitled to at least one "enhancement" surgery for fine tuning if its necessary.  I did one eye about a year later and now everything now is spot on.

Considering how much water I get on my face while yakking and the spray from the ling showers, its pretty convenient not to have to worry about wiping or losing a pair of glasses.  Yep, you'll need sunglasses but at least you can get a cheap over the counter pair as opposed to prescription sun glasses or mess around with the clip-ons.

Contacts on the water...it can be done, I used to have oversized hard lenses in my scuba days.  Contacts would be quite an adventure with the sand/wind/salt while rocking around in your yak.

While it won't help you catch anymore fish or keep your yak from getting stolen at least you won't have to worry about fumbling around for your glasses when you wake up in the morning.  Funny thing...let's see how long it takes for you to get out of the habit of trying to adjust the glasses on your nose when they're no longer there.

Congrats!

My wife and I had lasik in august '06.  Its the BEST THING EVER (well, almost...)  she has 20/15 and I have 20/12.  we liked it so much a friend had it done 2 months ago and still cant stop talking about how much he loves it.  But, my eyes are a little more prone to drying out and I am a total sunglasses junkie now.

:smt005 I was thinking the same thing!  The two people I know who've had the procedure both continued to poke their fingers at their face for about six months :smt005

james, glad it worked out for you!

my dad invented the kind of laser they use for lasik.

not the optics or machinery. the kind of chemical reaction that emits the light
of a single wavelength that they then focus and aim to do the surgery.

he is a retired laser physicist.

hey, I had to tell somebody too, kind of proud of the old guy for that one.
