Cabezon

Guys,  I heard about the great Cabezon.  Best advice on how to catch one from poke poling or jetty fishing please!

Cabezon live in rocky crevasses, and they like to bite squid. Find a spot with rocky crevasses and stick some squid in there.

I've caught a few off the HMB jetty. No need to cast. They're in amongst the rocks right under your feet.

I seem to pick them up on smaller, dark colored swimbaits. They like crabs so I figure the more crab like your bait, the better your chances are.

Crabs, abs, and octopus are what I find most often in their bellies...

That's the most I ever saw in one belly. 

The rock crab and abalone meat in this one were approximately 6" each. 



They like surge so if you can drop a hook where the water is nasty they will be near. 

Some people throw small mesh bags out with smelly crap like squid, octopus or chum to get there attention or draw them in quicker.

Wow!! This fish came with Big Jim appetizers.

Pick small crabs from the rocks. Ab guts work too in a mesh bag. I have a lot of luck with lucanus knock off jigs, but that may be a pain off the rocks.

Do you just hook the crab through the belly?

More or less. Size 1 hook up from below and through the back. I use a 3oz weight and 3' leader.
