Hey guys,

Me and some friends are heading to Cherry Lake for some boat in camping over July 4th weekend. I'll have my 12 foot Gregor aluminum and a couple kayaks. I've never been there, but I understand you can camp just about anywhere around the lake as long as you're at least 100 feet from the high water mark. (Of course the goal is to find an existing camp spot rather than create a new one.)

Anyone have any tips on good camp spots? Or fishing techniques for summertime at Cherry Lake?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,

Alex

Haven't been there but have been reading up on it on a few sites.
Have you checked out  http://www.paddlingcalifornia.com/Cherry_Lake.html.
That site has a lot of other boat in camp info as well.

Thanks for the link! I think I scanned over that one a while back, but worth reading again.

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind.

What time of year did you fish Eleanor, and what worked best?

Ha!

Did they hassle you at all?

Did you hang your food from a tree, use a bear canister, or what?

I haven't been there since I was a kid.  I have great memories of going in the back way from Tuolumne City and fishing the Clavey and Tuolumne rivers on the way.  Back then there was lots of logging truck traffic and CB radios were a must.  I think the area burned extensively a couple years ago, not sure what kind of shape it is in now.  It was far enough off the beaten path that there wasn't much use even on holiday weekends but that was in the early 80s.  No idea what its like now, but I caught a bunch of mostly small trout out that way a million years ago.

Thanks, Doug. I think it's getting more popular these days... Ranger said we should try to show up on Thursday or early Friday if we want a prime boat in camp spot for the holiday weekend.

Last I heard the road from tuolumne is closed from being washed out. Holidays are packed as are most weekends through the summer. Haven't seen or heard many reports since the road is closed from this side. Although a guy pulled a 12.75# out two weeks ago. Definitely bring your wheels in case it's to busy and you decide to fish Eleanor.

This is mostly a weekend to hang out with friends, drink some beers, and stare at a campfire. Fishing is just a bonus, if it happens.

Thanks for the info. (I'll bring my wheels anyway....)

I heard Cherry Lake was going to be drained soon to replace a damaged dam valve. Might be worthwhile calling the ranger station to see.

Thanks. Fiancé talked to the ranger this morning, and they didn't mention anything about that so I assume it hasn't happened yet.
