Quick question. I live in the Central Valley would like to get in on the halibut bite. But it's a long drive to find out the water is to choppy. What wind speed is ok and what is bad. I'm talking about sf bay.

anything under 10 would be okay. Just make sure you are going with the tide. If its an outgoing tide plus incoming wind, it would be a long long hard paddle back lol

i always use 5-15kts forecast as acceptable-- just be off when the wind starts ramping up (and not paddling back into it)

summer weather pattern is pretty darn predictable- calm and foggy AM, fog clears, wind comes up, fog comes back in

I use sailflow.com as it has a lot of stations around the bay. I use the station on the Hornet as my primary. They also give tides for which ever station you pick.

I feel windfinder.com does a pretty good job.  I'd stay off if the wind is over 9mph early (like 8am) as it will likely just be blown out.  I fish up to 15mph, but remember the wind is worst on the east side of the bay in the shallow water as the waves have a long way to travel across and build until it hits the shallow flats.

Is anyone going out on Sunday morning? I want to load up my kayak tonight and be ready but being not an expert, would I be wasting my time? It looks like 13 mph winds and low tide first thing in the morning, which means the tide will be coming back in?

Sorry for the stupid questions.

Unforunately not me, cause I had a slight accident of going down some stairs headlong.  Spent 3 hours in emergency getting xrayed, all good.  Only real pain is that I jammed my left shoulder, so no lifting yak onto truck rack. recuparating for ARW tourney.

Get better soon Martin, hope to see you out there next weekend! If you need I can haul your yak for you in my truck.

There are no stupid questions unless I'm the one asking them.

It's been a long time since I was in the Bay area, but I'd suggest that if you don't know the Bay, 13mph morning winds are a no-go, because they're only going to build as the day goes on.

Up here in Oregon, we think of a 11 knot wind as the cap.  From 11 knots, up, the wind becomes a factor when trying to fish and a butt pain to paddle or pedal against - but that's in open water, not in the bays.

It is no fun fishing over 10 mph for me fighting the currents of the bay.  I spend my whole time keeping a decent position or orientation depending on where I launched from.  Sometimes if it is windy I will anchor up and fish then try a different spot and anchor.

I'd say it's not going to be a great day out today. Went out yesterday off the Grand Ave launch in Alameda, and man it was BLOWING. First time in the channel by Coast Guard Island that I've ever felt unsafe. Today's shaping up to be a repeat of yesterday. It was just an exercise run (no fishing) in my SIK. I only looped CG island, went back in and felt like I had a hell of a workout. 25 minutes max, and pretty much everything was soaked when I returned. Wind was strong enough that it felt like it wanted to take my paddle out of my hands.

checking on on conditions, it looks like there's a small craft advisory in effect for today.

I think anchoring needs lower wind conditions. I think it can also vary depending on how much open water the wind comes across.

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan
