Lots of environmental related issues seem to head in the wrong direction.   I hope in the future my kid can still enjoy what I enjoy today.

And also in the news: Ryan Zinke the guy Trump appointed to Sec of Interior is making a run at turning huge amounts of public land over to farmers and ranchers.  While we're arguing about lead ammo Trump's team is working at closing vast swaths of land to hunters and fishermen.

Nice. That's our Dear Leader. I hope everyone who voted for him is enjoying America being great again at the expense of our natural resources.

I don't really care what side of the aisle you guys sit on, but I don't pick sides in politics. I vote with my brain not like a robot cookie cutter republican or democrat. This really pisses me off.

I was in the Army, I'm cool with giving our boys the best gear in the world, but taking away funds from Salmon recovery for a FUCKING WALL IN THE DESERT THAT WON'T STOP A SINGLE PERSON is absolutely fucking stupid. Fuck that wall and enjoy the salmon fishing while they aren't extinct.

Well said. This issue should be important to democrats, independents, republicans, and ANYONE else who values our natural resources.

Completely agree about the wall, by the way... A complete waste of money and a logistical and environmental nightmare. The wall won't be very effective when it come to stopping humans who might wish to cross the border illegally, but it sure will stop wildlife that needs to travel north/south in search of food, shelter, new territory, etc, etc...

All of the above +1. The guys who used to be the Sagebrush Rebellion just came back. While whipping up righteous indignation is a good start, call your congressional reps. I'm pretty sure the California Senators are already willing to fight this crap, but some of our congressmen need to hear about it. Also, if you can, send a few bucks to the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Program (Project?). TRCP is leading a coalition of hook and bullet conservationists on the subject. This is an area where we can also align with the Audubon Society, Sierra Club, and other folks we often disagree with as consumer-users; maybe build some bridges that can do some good on similar issues, too.  If you really want your kids to enjoy the stuff we still have left in the wild, we can't start too soon to save it for them.

I'm not so sure our senators are on our side on this issue. I know for a fact that Dianne Feinstein is easily persuaded by Resnick and his farming magnate buddies...

OH, she's definitely in the farmers' pockets, but in terms of transferring federal lands to states (which means private interests), I think she is pretty strongly against it. Maybe that's wishful thinking. Couldn't hurt to call and say "Hi. Don't do this!"

Haha I feel like I write old Congressman Mike Thompson an email once a month or so, usually because I disagree with him. Maybe trying a few senators wouldn't hurt. It sucks because at least my district is so liberal I hate having to rely on these guys. I can't believe that politics are so jacked up in this country right now that "hook and bullet" conservationists as you called us (which I like) have to forge alliances with people that hate everything about what we do and who constantly try to de-legitimize (if that's a word) everything we do for the environment. I like guns bacon and bullets as much as the next guy, but I rely on the environment for my lifestyle. Sad day indeed, sorry this thread got me all worked up.

Mike Thompson is actually a pretty good friend to the hunters and fishermen. I'm not sure how he is on other issues, but isn't he a stalwart in the Congressional Sportsmens' Caucus? As I recall, he's a life member of CWA, DU, etc.  we have to get people of both parties on our side, and I think he's there, at least on conservation issues. The best way to actually get stuff done is to blot out the hard line between D and R, and work on those issues on which we agree. Lord knows there are enough issues to fight about!
