I've been through a couple of carts now. A few weeks ago I left my diy scupper cart at a beach in Mendocino and someone took it. I was bummed, but the harbor freight wheels I had used really didn't work well in sand. For weeks, I procrastinated and dragged my kayak across the sand while I debated what kind of cart to get next. I seriously debated sucking it up and getting wheeleez.

Then I saw her. $7 for a Barbie jeep at a thrift store in fort Bragg. And she ran! It was good fun having it around before I took the wheels off.

I decided this time that I wanted a cart that would do well on all terrain including sand. I also didn't wanted to do a scupper cart because of recently seeing what kind of damage scupper carts can do if you aren't careful, and I'm often not. I also decided that for weight purposes, I'd rather have a heavy cart that won't break than a light cart that I can bring in my kayak.

So I built the Barbie beast. I don't think it's a masterpiece, but maybe it'll give people some ideas.

I used hitch pins on the ends of the axle for now in case I want to change anything. I used galvanized pipe inside of the PVC in some places to add strength. I drilled holes in the upper elbows to attach bungies.

My total cost was very low because I already had a few things lying around. I'm not sure what it would cost to make it if you had to buy everything.

That is a beast. Does it go reasonably well over sand?

It doesn't work as well as id hoped it would in deep sand, but much better than two harbor freight wheels. Yesterday I rolled it up hill through deep sand with about 40-50 pounds of added fish weight and lots of gear, and it was a little tough but worked.

Maybe you should have put a saddle on the jeep instead! Battery powered cart! :smt006

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan

That's a great idea. Imagine that jeep with puffy wheeleez wheels...

And done, and done. . .
Not intended to squelch anyone's creativity, but the flotation tires have been deemed to work the best overall in soft sand. For asphalt, packed dirt and concrete paths/launch, etc. smaller hard wheels are super.
