I just got a Trailex trailer and was wondering how the registration process works. The trailer is still in pieces, but once assembled, do I need to take it to the DMV? Is PTI the right thing to do? Any suggestions on how I can minimize the time spent at the DMV would be greatly appreciated.

If you're a AAA member just go into their local office to get it done. Much better than standing in line at the DMV.

I was under the impression that a new trailer without prior registration would need to go through the dmv versus AAA.  I've got a newly built trailer for my teardrop build but haven't had a chance to register it yet.

I believe a trailer built for human occupation has different rules than a cargo trailer.

You need to take it to the dmv so an inspector can verify the VIN with the Mfg.  paper work.  You need to go there first and get a temporary permit so you can legally tow it on public roads, then take it back over to have it inspected.  It's a hassle.

That sucks!
Good luck NWMan. Hope you pick a DMV day when the fishing is slow.

Scotty, you lucked out.  Took my fresh built Harbor Freight trailer to the local DMV, had it inspected, paid fees, got plates only to discover when I went to put the trailer on my Mexican Insurance policy the DMV had made an error when entering the trailer's vin number in their computer.  Then they TRIED to charge me the re-registering fee for correcting their mistake.  After a mini-Turrets episode, they waved the fee.

On another subject, was your trailer subject to the recall for the light system?

Hey Scotty, did they do a full check for brake lights, runnning lights, turn signals etc etc?  My trailer is ready to go but I ran into a problem on the tow vehicle 4 pin connector I'll need to fix this weekend.

On a whim I did stop by the AAA office in Vacaville today (they moved over by the Nut Tree btw) and was informed that yes, it needed to be handled by the dmv.

May 9th apt via online registration...sigh

I was afraid of that. Every time I enter the DMV, I'm sure that my IQ drops a few points (and I don't have a lot to spare in that department...).

Schedule an appt online and go to the one in Santa Teresa, wait time is pretty short if you have appt there.

Thanks for the info. It looks like there is no way to get out of going twice. Luckily, there are a couple of DMV offices nearby...

Some locations don't physically inspect the trailer, just there for filing/ paperwork like mentioned above and the hand off of PTI plate in my case with my Yakima rack n roll.

Yea, they did check to make sure all was working correctly and since it was  things went pretty smooth.
I did only have to go down there only once, and if I got lucky , I'll take it!

As for the light recall  I did get a new light kit ,
LED style , much brighter, I guess .
Haven't gotten around  to switching it over yet,  that project seems to be on the back burner...
