Just returned from our annual trip to visit my wife's folks in Florida. Got in a little fishing and hunting with Grandpa in between some decent surf and a day at Disney with our daughter Sadie.

Final tally:
Three meat hogs
Two snook
Two sunburns
One Disney Day
Two decent days of chest high surf at Sebastien Inlet

Oh and we flew United so...
Six hours of flight delays
One changed planed due to a failed take off attempt
Two return trips to the gate due to mechanical failures
One outrageous checked baggage charge ($150 for cooler with frozen game meat and dry ice)
Three separated middle seats traveling with a child (thanks to both 20 something male a-holes who won't change seats so a nine year old girl can sit with her mother)

Great trip, bad airline

Sounds like a sweet trip! The fishing in Florida is awesome!!!
I do gotta play the devils advocate though...
Why is it the fault of the "20 something male a-holes" that you couldn't sit together? Is it their fault you didn't pre book your seats? I'm tall and cause of that I try to book aisle seats. While I probably would have traded seats with your wife it's still a bit of an imposition to ask someone that possibly reserved a specific seat to sandwich themselves into a middle seat cause you didn't have the time, planning or foresight to pre book your seats.

Sorry for the rant... I miss the red fish out in Florida!!!!

Cuz its the right thing to do to allow a young girl to sit with her Mom.

Period.

Or her dad!

Kylee would've wanted to sit with me in that situation.  :smt002

Great report and pics.

I used to travel 80% for work. This comes up often, and I never had a problem moving so that a family could sit together.

It's not that big of a deal. An minor inconvenience in a world full of inconveniences.

I do agree that it's the right thing to do to move and I have changed seat before in exactly the same sorta situation. But making a person out to be an    a-hole because you didn't set your situation up the way you needed it is pretty lame too.

I've booked flights a number of times in which they didn't assign seats.  When I called to explain that I'd like a seat together with my kid, they tell you to talk to the agent when you check in.  The agent then tells you that the flight attendant will help you swap seats in order to sit together.  So it's not always our fault than we don't get ticketed together.  It's just the way it turns out.  All the times I've been in this situation, I've been accommodated.

That being said, I've been in the opposite situation in which changing seat would have cause me to bump shoulders with another broad shouldered person for a long flight.  And I have refused to switch in that situation, hoping that some one else better equipped to switch would do so.  I can't recall a situation that someone else hasn't switched on a plane.

No one to blame in this situation, without knowing more of the details.

I will call any able bodied young man who doesn't change seats to let my young daughter sit with me or her Mom an asshole...because they are.

Tons of reasons why a family may end up being seated separately...many totally beyond the family's control.

Only one reason for an able bodied young man not to get up and move and let a young girl sit with her parent...they're an inconsiderate asshole.

......and, I have refused to change seats when asked by another passenger who wanted to "sit near her friend."   I have some claustrophobia and really have to be on the aisle.  So, I get a ticket and assigned seat months beforehand to make sure I'm on the aisle, but this passenger gets angry and starts badmouthing.  Luckily, Polepole was in the seat behind her and set her straight.  Thanks again Allen.
