For those of you who have Shark Shield, I heard about the 'zap' if you touch the wire.  Could somebody please tell me what's that all about?

I grabbed the tail once. There was a mild zap and tingling and muscle spasm in my arm. It wasnt painful, but definitely made me say WTF!  :smt003. Does that answer your question?

oh yeah, you can feel it if you grab the hot end.
It won't make your hair stand up, but it is enough to make you drop it quick.

Yes, it will zap you, and it is annoying, but not really painful. It's nothing compared to, say, an electric fence.

Is it just the end or tip of the tail or is it any part of the antenna?

The metal electrodes are the parts you want to avoid. There are two of them built into the tail. I've had the tail land on my head and wrap around my neck while diving. Not fun.

But it's worse out of water, I've found. I once forgot to turn it off and stepped on the tail on the beach and it knocked me on my ass.

The tail has also gotten stuck in rocks while diving, forcing me to turn around and unsnag it. So while it supposedly keeps sharks away, it opens the door to a whole new set of annoyances and problems.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

Thank you all.   I am wondering if there will be any harm to an electrical motor, but it sounds like the 'zap' only occurs when the contact is with the metal electrodes, which are located at the tip of the tail.  Did I get the location of the electrodes correct?

Once, after landing at Mitchell's Cove, I got my kid and his friend carry my kayak up the steps. I'd forgotten to turn off the shark shield and they were zapped repeatedly. They were not happy campers...

I have been zapped many times and yes it's like a jolt from an an electric fence.  If the tail touches another part higher up on the tail I have seen a spark/flash in the water.

With that said.  I won't dive without one.

I thought it's supposed to turn off when out if the water (and blink green). Mine seem to do it (but I did not test this specifically )

Where I grew up (midwest) an electric fence packed a serious punch. I grabbed ahold of one once after having been told it was turned off and I couldn't let go for what seemed like forever. A shark shield is nothing like that...

Well I guess all electric fences are not the same.  So maybe its more like a 5000v electric fences pulse vs. a 10000v.  Mine sends pulses and is not continuous so you could let go.  When diving and the tail gets near my face I can feel it pulsing in my teeth fillings.  I have not touched a shark shield with a full grab without a 7mm wetsuit and have only had accidental contacts.  I did forget to turn it off yesterday on a dive and got zapped out of water and it wasn't as bad as in the water so there are differences.

Since I have been shocked by both a shark shield and an electric fence this week I still say a quick contact to either have a similar feeling of oh shit.  And like Rob says all better than a shark bite.  At least what I would imagine a shark bite would be.  I am sure someone will say they were bitten and it just tickled.
