Duane-

You are sick dude... you come up with the greatest contraptions for a yak. Your brain works in crazy ways when it come to rigging a yak. You set up looks pretty sweet... I like the floats.

Frank-

Sorry to hear that you took another swim out there today. Caca passa you know. I've had an asshole do a fly-by a couple years ago right at the jaws at Moss. Not good... I fought off the wakes and was able to stay topside but, still... I just about washed up on the rocks. I'm with Allen... Frankfishing doesn't seem right for you... more like "Frankswimming"... or just playing "Dunk". I'm just glad you weren't hurt in the incident.

Wouldn't have been so funny to the yahoo if Frank had been hurt.

Frank, you could also alert the Harbor Master who could have kept an eye out for the Osprey. I know a couple of guys in that office.

Frank... sorry to hear about your taking a swim at the expense of an idiot.  Glad everyone was OK.

I've been following this and the thread at Coastside and I marvel at how some guys just don't believe that there are idiots like this out there.  Wake up, eh?

As for nicknames... I think you've earned another one... maybe "Turtle"?

Sorry to hear you lost a good rod in the process... school of hard knocks.  At least the gaff floats... :smt002

Amen to that!

I totally agree with what Tote did "Stand your ground" and make sure these idiots know that they can't get away with this kind of behavior. IMO: these "tough guys" are brave because there is no one policing them. I agree with what others said = "take action" - take photos and show them to the proper authorities right away (Harbor Master or Coast Guard) and FOLLOW UP with it. If not, no action will be taken and the idiot gets away.

We seriously need to keep a close eye on this reoccurring problem and make sure it does not happen again.

I'm glad Frank is OK but in the end he still lost gear because of this mishap.

If this happened to me, I'd use my VHF, call for assistance and make sure other boaters aware of the situation and hope some good guy turns in the fool who put me in danger.

For example:

"mayday, mayday my kayak just got swamped by a 20 ft Boston Whaler that got too close to me, did not get the CF number but it's white, has a crew of 2 and launched from the HMB Harbor"

actually, the three distress calls are securite, pan-pan, and mayday, in increasing order of danger.   securite (french pronounciation "se-cur-i-tay") is simply urgent, like "i just ran out of gas and i'm a 15 miles from the harbor and 5 miles off shore.  pan-pan refers to a dangerous situation with no imminent danger to life of vessel, say dead in the water and 1000 yards offshore and the anchor may or may not hold.  mayday is imminent danger to life and/or vessel, like a vessel in the surf zone or very close.

if the kayak was swamped and you are unable to bail it out, then a "pan-pan" or a "mayday" is appropriate.  if you are able to get back underway, then a call to the harbor master on channel 16 might be the way to go.  since you are all starting to wear vhf radios, this might be a good thing to review.

I'm a power boater, kayaker and float tuber I happen to love the water. But this kind a thing happens all to often. Its not just to kayakers I have had this happen to me in a bassboat. I know one day Ill fall off my bow cause someone puts up a big wake and just doesn't give a you know what. I am sorry this happened to you Frank Its not right. I bet you wanted to hit this person right between the eyes. I think this kind of offence should carry a large fine. If you can afford a Osprey with twin motors you can afford a large fine. This PISSIES ME OFF cause there are boaters that are carefull and courteous like me that will take the hit for this asshole. I feel its like one bad apple spoils the bunch. I glad you are O.K. and Iam sorry about your tackle.

Sincerly pissed off

Wow!
Sorry to hear about the accident, Frank.
But very happy to hear you are OK and handled the situation like a pro!
This is a good opportunity for us to think about what we might do in such a situation. Because it always pays to be prepared. For me, the most important thing would be to get back on the kayak. Then try to get the other boat's CF numbers. Then make the call on the VHF.
I admit it would be difficult to avoid confrontation in a situation like this…because part of me (the stupid part) would want to discharge a flare in the direction of the assualting boat. Or track them down and fight.
But this would definitely be the WRONG thing to do. Mainly because people that are stupid enough to swamp a kayaker are also stupid enough to point a gun at you….and most PBs do carry.

I grew up in a family of boaters. My grandpa had boats, my uncles had boats, and my dad had a boat. But they are all very responsible boaters. And they passed that knowledge down to me. Perhaps the single greatest lesson my grandpa taught me was a simple phrase that I have incorporated into my everyday life (beyond the world of boating) and that phrase is: "You pretty much have to assume…at all times…that everyone else…is ret@rded."  And thusly, give them a wide berth, allow them to pass, stay out of their way, etc, etc.

Just glad you're OK buddy,
PK

Good report and discussion.  Too bad about what happened to you, Frank.  I agree with what PK just said about not pursuing a confrontation - what Tote did sounds like something I or any of us would feel like doing, but it's something that my wife would kick my ass for!  And she's right - someone will eventually get hurt or killed looking for a fight from a bonehead.  Taking pictures, reporting CF numbers, using the radio...  these are all good things to be ready to do, but each situation is different.  The main thing would be to stay safe and make a level-headed decision about how to respond beyond just getting yourself back to out of the water and secure with your belongings.  I was playing a salmon among a dozen boats or so a couple miles off Shelter Cove in '05 when one of the powerboats decided to bail out of there in a hurry and almost ran over my big king that was on the top of the water about 40' from me.  It was a typical thoughtless a-hole move, but it happened so fast I didnt' have time to consider a reaction besides a dirty look.  Also, I think that as we kayakers become more common and recognized and accepted on the water this kind of thing should start to happen less often - hopefully anyway...

I'm sure there's nothin i'm gonna say that hasn't been said already, except that, this kind of act makes the mind guilty.whoever it was will be paying for it ten-fold in re-paid "bad karma" for the rest of his life.

however, I think it made you stronger and more confident in your aquatic abillities.  :smt011 (i sure made that sound like it was a good thing)

Frank

That totally sucks. If it had been me, I would probably would have thought about discharging my flare gun, but that would have been equally as dumb.  :smt013
