I don't understand why they didn't just keep upping the price to pay people to leave the plane. It sounds like they offered $400 and then $800, and then went to random selection. Why not try $1200 or $2000? Would have been a lot cheaper than beating up a passenger and losing $250 million in market cap in a day.

There is a policy in place that if the next available flight is less than 4 hours they can only offer $800. If more than 4 hours (which was this case) they can offer upto $1300.

I think I'd rewrite that to be a reverse auction starting at a the average economy ticket price of the flight and then adding $100 every 5 or so minutes until enough people bite. Cheaper than what they're going to weather. This is one of the few times I've actually written to a company to tell them I'm never again going to use their services.

I'm not saying its a good policy, just that it is the policy.

What a lot of people do not know is its a voucher for UP TO that amount on a flight you book. If you have a voucher for $1200 and it cost $600 for a round trip ticket you lose the remaining $600. You can not book two tickets with a single voucher.

Ditto. Haven't flown in years---I hated it back then and it sounds like it's only gotten worse.
I don't like stuff that sucks.

Interesting theory I heard yesterday.
Start offering bumps at $2000. If more than one person accepts lower it to $1800. Keep going down in price until you only have one taker.
I haven't flown in years because I have airports almost as much as Bay Area traffic.

It's a reverse auction and it's a good idea.  Government contractors do it all the time when bidding projects, why is this any different?

How does putting a backpack under your seat restrict your legroom?
My feet are always under the seat in front of me.  That's the reason I bought the seat with more legroom.  I guess if I was 5 ft tall my feet would fine

myyak8me, everyone's safety comes before your comfort.

This is a safety issue how?  Seems more like a storage issue, not a safety issue.

Because it is on a commercial airplane, and EVERYTHING on a commercial airplane is either a safety issue or a security issue.  If you don't like that or agree we will be happy to re-accommodate you.
That is pure BS. It's about more seats and revenue.  Give me a break.

The seat in front of you isn't yours.  At least I've never paid for the seat in front of me, but meh.  I'm not short either.

You could just not bring a bag that would have to go under the seat in front of you.  That might help.

It's my fault for not using the sarcasm font.  I thought the sarcastic use of "re-accommodate" would tip my hand, but I guess not.  My bad.

I'm 6'3" and have always put a backpack under the seat in front of me.  I always manage to squeeze my feet underneath.  It's not foot room that's the problem; it's knee room.

The bigger issue is who gets the arm rests????  I always try to be cool and keep myself in check but always seem to be seated next to some squirmy mf'er who feels entitled to both arm rests.

Gov also puts out small dollar rfp's and gets no proposals or unqualified bidders so they have to up the contract budget (if they can) to attract any bidders at all. Really depends on who has what the other wants or needs and thats the differrence. Airline needs my seat, i dont need their offer....would it not be in my best interest to set a floor and let it go up from there?

Reverse auction seems like a great system to benefit to the airline. Allows them to set a cap and let people compete for a worse deal.  In a thread where everybody's complaining about how horrible airlines are it seems crazy to support a policy that benefits them over passengers.

Im actually flying into chicago on united in a couple weeks.....and im seated in the fight club area.
