So I'm looking to get my first vhf. Don't know anything about them or what's good and what I should get.

Hopefully someone here can help me out.

Thanks

Eh Bruddah,
GPS Store.com is selling the newest model of Standard Horizon HX 870 w/ GPS, waterprood, Distress call button to the Coast Guard for $209 w/ a $40 rebate till July 2017. Free shipping, no sales tax and it will cost you about $169 in the end. I have always had a Standard Horizon w/ GPS as it was recommended be other NCKA'ers  w/ ICOM as the best And most reliable VHS radios. The newer HX 870 has a bigger screen and they have improved to a much more simple and easy to use key pad. If you are a newbie to open ocean kayak fishing, having a good VHF is important for knowing that in an emergency you can help.
We are not fishing in Hawaii, where you can survive a spill for long,  even w/ a wetsuit.
Check it out!!!

Yep Bruddah, this is what I ended up buying.  It is a bit more $$ than other radios, but let's remember that the whole point of having the radio is to call for help, so when one needs it, it's because he's in real trouble, so the ability to instantly and accurately transmit his position for the helpers to find him is an easy choice to make.

That said, after GS-11, I figured out that I can only get about 8 hours use from it when I have the GPS active.  The good news is that it acquires the satellite signal quickly and the menus are easy to navigate, so in the future I will be keeping the GPS shut off until I actually need it; this should help keep the fat batteries kicking for days.

Here's the mail in rebate for the standard horizons so you can pretty much purchase it anywhere and still get the rebate.
