OK all you battery gurus, I'm in the process of outfitting the Tarpon with a ff (probably go with the Fisheasy 245DS) and I want to go the rechargeable battery route. I've been ready over all the old posts and the article by Bill and still have a question.

When looking to purchase the 10 AA NiMH batteries, I see they come in different mAh ratings like 1600, 2300, 2600. Does it really make much difference which mAh is used? My very basic understanding is higher mAh ratings will run longer. But does a higher rating have a downside like run hotter or not hold as many charges?

The set I'm looking at includes 12 AA 2600 mAh NiMH Rechargeable Batteries and a charger for about $25.00. But I don't want to order them if that's too much juice.

Any advice? Thanks.

You are correct in stating that the higher mAh rating will run longer.  It is a spec of the battery's performance over time.  The only negative effect I have had with higher capacity batteries is the expense!  The only time I have experienced heat issues was during a charge, sometimes they get up there.  Haven't heard anything about higher capacity batteries having a shorter life span though, good question.

That looks like a good deal. I paid $19 for a 10 pack of 2500 at Fry's.
Bought a charger separate.

The voltage range for my FF is 10-20volts.Charged car and boat batteries are around 13.5-14v at full charge. I made my battery pack with 12 larger capacity rechargeables. The battery bundle  runs 15.5-16.5 volts on a voltmeter at full charge, and lasts at least 2 days on a full charge. As Sean wrote, and I found out,the batteries need 4-5 charge-discharge cycles before they hold a maximum charge.
