Going from a $40 wal mart aquaglide paddle to a $130 Werner paddle is going to be night and day. I use the Werner skagit paddle and I like it. I dunno about pishing off rocks or otherwise using it as a lever against solid objects with any kind of force behind it though. Just brace, scoot, and paddle off, seems safer than risking a broken paddle.

The Trident 13 is a fantastic kayak it really comes into its own when it's paired with a light stiff paddle.  It's a total game changer,  go for it.

Most shops sell paddle guards. Little wrap that glues to the blade to protect from chipping when pushing off. Get the Warner and find something to protect the blades. The bending branches angler ace is another good paddle in that range.

Not sure I would recommend this paddle for that. I used mine for pushing out of some delta mud and it broke. Thankfully Jef replaced it for me.

The Werner Tybee has a graphite shaft and fiberglass-reinforced blades, and it's been mighty good about resisting my abuses.  Plus, it's reasonably priced.

I'm 5'11" and I use a medium-high paddle stroke.  With a Trident, I found the 250cm works a lot better than a 240cm.  With a 240, I'd occasionally bump the hull with my hands when digging against the wind or the current but haven't had that happen with the 250.

I think you'd need to be pretty tall to need to go longer than 250cm.

I used a Werner Skagit for years, and I really liked it.

However, if you are going to paddle fast water then you might consider getting a paddle with more bite. The Skagit is a "low angle" paddle, and as such it's great for cruising around all day. The Skagit isn't so good at generating lots of power quickly, such as you might need on a fast river.

If you plan on doing more river paddling than flat water paddling, then you might want to check out a paddle like the Werner Tybee. It should be at the same price point as the Skagit.

Perry you strike me as a high angle paddler, but I don't know. Most if
Not all Werner paddles are available in 5cm increments.  With high angle paddling you engage larger muscle groups, the paddle blade enters the water at a steeper angle theoretically closer to the kayak. The Skagit is a fairly low angle paddle that is exactly what some guys want. A touring paddle is a fair description. I am 6 feet tall and use a 235 CM corryvreckan, a low angle paddle would need to be be longer for me. Along with the lower weight expect your hand speed improvement to be a real plus. Making the assumption your height is within 3 inches of 5'11" either side I would recommend at 240 CM aquabound manta ray, Werner tybee, or bending branches Angler classic perhaps.

Thank you everyone :smt006 I learned some thing! I am 5"11. I like evryones oppinion on what (abuse) the American river is my river  I fish the American more than any other water. Sadly this year is the longest I've ever been out of the american :smt011.I've been walking the dogs down by ancil Hoffman watching for my striper to start. Sorry got side tracked I don't mean to abuse my gear but Mr being a Marine it's my nature .so the high angle sounds like my kind of padel and I think I will be softer on my padel :smt006

I'm 5'9" or so but I have a 29" inseam. I need a taller person's paddle because I sit taller in the seat than the average person of my height. I wonder if there is a measurement for how high your shoulder is when sitting to help determine the best paddle length.

I am 6'2" and paddle a 28" wide kayak. It is 1" narrower than your kayak. I am a high angle paddler most of the time. I started out with a 240 and have been stepping it down over the last couple of years. I now use a 220 high angle paddle and it seems to be the correct length based on paddle entry to the water and the shaft not being buried under the water. There is no need to try to paddle with the shaft under the water. All that needs to be in the water is the actual blade itself. I use a full carbon paddle, but a good glass paddle would work well for you. Look at the Adventure Technology Oracle Glass too. My other favorite paddles are the Werner line. I would have Werner if not using the AT now. http://www.atpaddles.com/us/products/oracle-glass If you want to hook up sometime I can bring paddles from 210-245 in full carbon for you to try out the different lengths. I know carbon is out of the price range, but the length tryout would be good.
