Read an article this morning ( http://www.calfishing.com/loc/spring_lake.html ) about Spring Lake in Santa Rosa talking about an unofficial 24 pound bass?! What?! The article goes on to say that there aren't any trout left in the lake and there probably aren't any lunkers in there either.  Have any of you guys fished Spring Lake? Are they just a bunch of shakers or are there some decent fish? Seems like a great place to take my yak on her maiden voyage, I have a Sonoma County Regional Parks Lifetime Membership and the place is 20 minutes from my front door.

Amos "SuperVato" has fished there a few times.  You can send him a PM, he's a relatively nice person.  :smt005

There's definitely still big bass in there.

Really tough lake to fish, though, because it's really shallow and weedy.

I have more fun targeting the blue gills with earthworms and ultra-lite tackle back in the tules.

I started kayak fishing to get away from most of you...

Yes, BIG bass... Gotta work for them though. They have seen all the lures and are line shy as hell! 8lb floro with suspending rip bait got my last biggi out of there. Go get um!!! :fishing2
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

Probably. Check regulations, I don't see where minnows are prohibited... I like to fool them into biting though. Fooling a big one into biting seems more rewarding. To each his own though :smt001 I release all fish there due to pressure and amount of people fishing. Big breeders are few and needed to propagate as they don't stock it (except for trout derbies) Good luck!!! :smt006

Apparently there are some trout in there (http://www.fishing-crew.com/fishing-reports/california/spring-lake-ca ). Seems to me with trout, bluegill, and crappie, there ought to be some biguns. Like you guys said they, it gets hammered by kids and casual fisherman from the shore.

Totally off topic, but related.
I was about 14 and we went back to Illinois to visit my grandfather. He had a farm outside of chilllicothe. My dad had told me of fishing in the pond when he was a kid for pan fish and bass. "Grampa, ever fish in the pond anymore?" "Nope, but I know there's bass in there." " how's that?" "I see them eat the ducklings every now and then"

We went to Walmart and bought a couple of rods about 15 minutes later.

Again but in the same vein, as a kid I remember seeing duckling lures, listed as being for pike and muskie.

Last summer a guy I know and his kid were picking up 3-4 pounders with nite crawlers and a bobber!
West side of the lake!

I like getting out there in the summer eve's, 10 min from my house, good Luck!

The trout probably came from next door lake ralphine, which is stocked regularly by the dfg. Spring lake is only 20 ish feet deep at its deepest and it hasn't been stocked in years. It gets pretty warm in the summer so the probability of any surviving is pretty darn slim. Theoretically it is connected to Santa Rosa creek which could have received some steelhead during this high water year, so who knows.

At any rate there are big bass in there, but you better bring your A game. I was there the other day and counted 8 kayak anglers, 4 belly boat fishermen, and 3 canoe fisherman. Also something like 15 or more shore fishers. And that was on a slow day. The fish there have seen everything.

If you don't catch anything it's a nice paddle, there is decent wildlife viewing and the scenery can be pretty good too....

Yes. Went out for 4 hours today and didn't even get a bite.  The water is high and someone at the launch ramp told me the only two they caught were under heavy cover tight against the bank.

Nick has done well at spring lake in the past! We haven't gone lately but that double hook up pic of me and nick was from 6 or 7 months ago and the float tube pics are 3-4 years old. It's a fun little bass hole that's for sure!
