Spoke with a friend who has Tomales wired and he went on Weds. of this week and said it just ain't right.  He recommended next Saturday since the tides are PERFECT.  So I'm going to take his advice and skip this Saturday and go next week instead.  Anyone?

I'm a possibility for next Saturday. I was going to go tomorrow also, but I got suckered into agreeing to go see Star Wars with my old lady and her kids.  :smt017

I started kayak fishing to get away from most of you...

Sean,

Are you still thinking about Hog Island this coming Saturday?  If so what time?  I just spent a couple weeks kayak fishing in Baja with some buddies of mine so my WAF (wife approval factor) is a bit low but I might be able to manage it.

It's about time someone plans a trip for kayak fishing here in Sonoma county.

I like that... WAF... My WAF may not withstand fishing this saturday plus a trip to the Santa Cruz Derby on the 12th... so we'll see.

Since Tomales is so close, I may have enough WAF to skim by... but it would have to be an early morning launch... be home by noon sort of thing.

Still going.  Hitting the water as early as I can get there, probably 0630 or 0700.  I will be with Jr., would love some company.

Scwafish.....where do you launch?

I've used both Marshall Beach & Larson Landing...and Tomales Bay State Park/Heart's Desire Beach.

I know of that "North Side Road" that runs up Tomales from the little town of Point Reyes Station, but have never driven it.   You launch from somewhere up along there?

And...what'cha think you'll be fishing for (excuse me) catching..?  ..

Launch at Nick's Cove which is located along highway 1... quite a ways north of Marshall.  It's the only boat launch around and is straight across the bay (east) from Hog Island.

Fishing for halibut... drift with live bait.  Bring a sabiki rig to catch live shiners and jacksmelt.

Tomales was off last week for sure. We have pulled a lot of buttes out of the bay in the past but last Wednesday was not one of those great days. Wind is a big factor on the fishing it was blowing us on a strange drift. We were not in kayaks since we needed to dive the point for abs in earlier that morning. Hog island would probably be your best bet. Bait is plentiful. Definitely bring sabikis for catching live bait. I like to fish a 3 or 4 ounce jig along with the live bait. Last year our catches were 50% on the jig and 50% on the live bait. Lots of fun!! last year my biggest was about 25lbs on my yak. When they get that big they get hard to handle. Thanks to Sean, GWKC I have now purchased my very own fish bag cooler. Thanks Sean! I am so jazzed about the bag. I would like to bag a big pacific butte this year. I think one about 50lbs would fill that bag. I am sorry I can't make it out with you on Saturday. :smt009 I have to work that day. Weather permitting (get back you nasty wind!!) i might make it out Friday morning. If I do I will post something for you all on Saturday.
Good Luck!!

When the Lord takes your sins, you never see them again. He casts them into the depths of the sea, forgiven and forgotten. I even believe that He places a sign over them that reads no fishing allowed.

I'm in (WAF is about 95%)... but the wind forecast right now is looking rather iffy... talking about gale force winds for Saturday...

We'll have to watch the wind forecast as the weekend nears.

Erik: I was wondering about the wind myself.  Were are you checking it.  The wind forecast at the bouy is UGLY.  Don't want to squander the hard earned WAF.

Brent:.  Glad you like the bag, I am loving mine.  I had around 50 lbs of fish in mine last week and there was a ton of room left...I would scared to see what it would take to fill it.  My fish kept GREAT on the water.  I left it in my yak for the ride home.  When I stopped to get gas I put a small bag of ice in the bag.  Everything was beautiful, cold and firm after my long drive from Humboldt.

Here's the Marine forecast...
http://www.wunderground.com/MAR/PZ/550.html

I also use www.iwindsurf.com... I have a subscription to that site and it is usually much more reliable and site-specific than the NOAA forecast.  Right now it's calling for NW winds at 17 knots all morning on Saturday.

Erik,

I'm glad you've embrassed the use of WAF.  I use the term in a several ways;
1.) I have an overall WAF which seems to be cumulative over time.
2.) Things I have done modify my WAF.
3.) Things I want to have or do seem to have there own WAF.

For example that new Calcutta reel I'm coveting currently has a really low WAF (see #3).  Purchasing it would have a low WAF (see #2) and would thus lower my personal WAF (see #1) and I wouldn't be able to enter the Elk rockfish/lingcod tourney in August.

Anyway, about http://www.iwindsurf.com.  Even if you don't have a subsciption you can still get a pretty decent forcast out of them.  I google searched "tomales bay site:www.iwindsurf.com" a while back and found this link which seems pretty good.

I don't know if this is normally free on that site, or whether google has allowed me to bipass some login proceedure.  Either way, I find the information useful.

You can get North coast real-time wind information for free... but the forecasting doesn't come up for free if you follow the links at the site... you may have exposed some freebies that aren't meant to be freebies... way to go...
