Plenty of divers out here and spearfishing is open year round.  And I will be that guy that won't let you go out in dangerous conditions.  As long as they don't look dangerous from shore.

Definitely take the experienced divers up on the offers.  You'll progress by leaps and bounds over just going out on your own, plus its always safer to go out with a buddy.  There are very few cowboys on this board.  We are very safety conscious and pretty quick to call out unsafe behavior.

Yea that's good. I finally hit that age where my pride doesn't get in the way of going home at the end of the day.
