Probably wouldn't hurt to take one of the kayak guides down there for a day to make sure this is what your interested in, try it before you buy it. Had a few guys up here go all on just to resale all there gear at a substantial loss a month or two later. Just my $0.02

I was thinking that as well, do you have any suggestions? I found this place http://www.kayakfishing.com/schools.html but was thinking about what I could buy for fishing for $259 instead, but I believe it would be wise to do something like this.
Eric (in) Lolita ( sorry if I spelled that wrong) is on here and does guides. I'm in Oregon so mostly useless for what's available in your area. Except what I read here.

Now your going to incite an NCKA inquiry into your reading of Russian literature while being an active member of a Great USA Fishing Forum.  Let the media shit storms begin :smt044 ... You may be asked to paddle down, or get "imfished" (no peaches involved here)

World Literature was my favorite class in high school.  I still read a lot, and I read Russian classics.  Much to my 12 year old's dismay, I make her read the classics too.

Lolita was originally written in English tho.

MAtt/MF:

Sometimes we go off on tangents.  And by we I mean me.  And by tangents I mean whatever comes to my head at the time that may or may not be fit for human consumption.  And by human I mean everyone but Antonio.

You can have your thread back now.

Maybe.

And yes, hire Eric for a trip out of Shelter Cove.

Welcome again!

Welcome, MF. Definitely try to get some time on the water before you plunk down a lot of money. Kayak fishing is awesome, but the ocean around here is seldom friendly. Seasickness, thinking about sharks, plus the generally cramped and soggy nature of kayaking can all take their toll.

I started with a surfing wetsuit, a PFD, a cheap inflatable kayak, plus a pair of fins in case the kayak deflated and I needed swim to shore. I'd never suffer though using that horrible gear now, but I had awesome adventures at the time and caught big fish.

Welcome Matt! There's not much ocean fishing going on right now, but if you're interested in the whole guided thing and like crabs there's a guy on Craigslist who guides out of doran beach! I can't remember his name (I know, tons of help) but if you look on Craigslist you'll find it. I know some people on here know the guy, maybe they'll chime in. Could be a nice alternative to a long paddle/long day guided fishing trip for your first outing.

If you want to wait for rockfish season and travel a bit, bushy on here guides out of Santa Cruz I believe it is. I've been wanting to get on a trip with him myself, but my work schedule is terrible!

Hope you get out there soon! You'll be hooked.

That's pretty cool. But, for some reason, it made me think of one of my favorite scenes from Groundhog Day...
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

So I leave the thread for a weekend and it ended up all over the place! I appreciate all of the advice guys, unfortunately, my mind was made up and my wife showed weakness. I'm picking up a kayak this evening if everything goes well. I can go catch trout, bass, crappies, but now I have to learn how to rockfish. Good thing about the internet is all you experienced guys like to give away information that could otherwise be sold, so time to hit the Googler and the YouTubes. If anyone is feeling generous around rockfish season I swear I won't talk much and never bitch. I'll even puke quietly.

Welcome to NCKA.  Yes these threads can go sideways real easy. Especially during off season for most.

Glad the wife gave a little.  Now you just have to get out and paddle around a bit.  Come back refreshed and relaxed and you may just find that your wife will start to encourage you to go out when you get grumpy.  It works for me.

There are lakes and rivers you can navigate while you learn your kayak.  I stayed on rivers for months and practiced flipping it and jumping back in a bunch before I felt comfortable going out on the ocean.  It's a must to know you can get back in when you fall out.  You will be able to focus more on the fishing once you learn that.  I wish I was not so anti social and had met some kayakers early on rather than trying to go out alone because I didn't want to hold anyone back.

Have fun but be safe out there.

By the way initials for your user name works just fine.  It will fit on a plaque better when you start winning fishing awards and you won't have to look at a plaque that's says "FNG fish terrorist killing machine in the making" or something similar.

See you around.

I tried "FNG fish terrorist killing machine in the making" but it was taken lol. Yea, I was thinking about going easy on the inside of Doran on a calm day. Parents live up by lake Berryessa so I might go up there and try and get some bass. Also, I work in Fairfield and can jump into Susuin or Napa marsh pretty easy after a half day of work and just paddle about and I plan on flipping it a lot. I eventually want to get back into Ab diving so need to be practiced. I haven't gone since I was 18 with some friends. It was way too rough and we had no business being out there, but nobody wanted to be the guy that said it was too dangerous....so I dog paddled around and tried not to drown for 4 hours and never wanted to go back again. But man, I miss abalone and I aint so stupid as I was.  Going to pick this up from Lox after work.  http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=77159.0
