In defense of the duct seal method, I have to say I love it, and haven't really had any issues with it.  The key is to be sure the kayak is dry and clean the surface just like you would if you were gluing it.  I role it out, like you used to do with playdough, into about a 1 inch thick rolled out piece, then you form a transucer shape and pinch the two ends together. You also have to use your finger and go around the entire inner and outer edge pushing down and spreading the duct seal.  After doing the inside, you can then use your finger to push back any duct seal that would be in the way of the ducer.  All of my kayaks are stored on their side and transported upside down and it's maybe once on the trip home fallen off on me.  However I take the ducer out every time before transporting or storing.

Great input folks.  I could read this stuff all day.  Do any of you bath guys or gals run into any issues with inspections?  Also having water in your hull on a hot day, doesn't that humidifying your hull and make things a little musty inside?  Just curious in case I go the bath route and go camping down a river or something of that nature.  What if you turtle.  Do you lose the water in your bath?

Will the transducer work through duct seal?  It would be nice if it worked to just put a thin patch of duct seal on the bottom, lay the transducer on top of it, then duct seal around the whole mess to secure it.  Air bubbles/gaps should be a non issue.

It does. I tried it. Still not my favorite method, though. I got a much cleaner signal with a water bath.

The problem I have with duct seal is that it softens and loosens up when it gets hot (like when your yak bakes in the sun on the roof of your car).

In the 5 years I've had my AI, I'm pretty sure I've only had to re-do the duct seal about 4-5 times.  It may not be the most permanent solution, but it certainly works, especially in a pinch.  No need to wait for glue to dry or anything.  If you wanted to test out a friends FF, or just got a new one the night before a tourney, it's a great option to have.  It actually feels stickier when it's warm, and if properly installed, it doesn't just fall off from the heat.
