I usually give random replies and ask unrelated questions. Kind of like I do here on the forum.  :smt044 (I knew if i didn't someone would). I like to see how the AI deals with unexpected replies. Plus I figure I'm wasting their computer time. Usually it gives up and says it will add me to the do not call list.

We haven't had our ringer for our home phone on in years. Only used to make calls. Most calls are on our cell phones nowadays . As much as I hate them ! They are great for emergencies though. Like when I need my wife to fill up my gas tank if I am headed out for a fishing trip.... I mean business meeting.

My AI doesn't seem to care what I say. As long as I keep pedaling and sailing, it's happy. Kinda the opposite of my wife in that respect...

I got one of these call screeners.  It works so well!!

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00U1PPWDO/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

There is a newer model, but this is the one I have.
Basically, a call comes in and the caller is told if they are a telemarketer to hang up.  If not, then they are directed to press zero.  At that time the calls goes through.  If it is a telemarketer, you can go back and add them to the 'reject' list.  You can create two lists; accept and reject.  Accept list are those people or businesses that have either been approved or it they called and didn't get flagged for reject list.

I never get a call I don't want any more.  I can still review who called and it's pretty amazing.  I average at least a dozen calls a day that are either already on the delete list or are added to the list.

It does a lot more with options on how you want it to answer and screen calls.  Read up on it to see if it would work for you.  For us, it's a lifesaver!!

I have home my answering machine set to pick up at 1 ring.
Almost every time as soon as they hear a message,  they hang up. Or if they do start to leave a message,  I pick up the reciever and hang up immediately...
On my cell phone  I never answer a call from a number I don't know.
They almost always never leave a message either. I hate robo calls. :smt076

1500 number block list. That's nice. My home phone only has a 10 number block list.
I'll look into this product. That's for the info.

We got rid of our land line about a year ago due to the endless stream of robocalls. We're very happy with the results.

I would do the same, but we are too far in the sticks to have cell coverage, as it is, my phone line is packaged with my Comcast TV and Internet

Once you reject a number, when they call again, does your phone ring?

I can't see who is calling. I just leave a voice mail that I will delete all calls from solicitors. The only legitimate calls I do receive are either amber alerts from the police or the garbage company calling regarding delayed service. Even the politicians don't leave messages. I do get a solicitor leaving message one call out of 50. My friends know to call me on my cell. I only keep the land line for emergency purposes but I am considering removing it.

The machine can be set up a few different ways. One way is to hook it up in-line between the house phone and the wall outlet.  In such a config, you do not hear the ring on black listed calls.  If the machine is set up in parallel with the phone, the phone will ring once.  If the call is a reject call, that will be the end of it.  If it's a new call not on the list, there will be one ring, then the machine picks up the call and plays one of several prerecorded messages you can select from.  (There version 3 allow you to record your own message)  The message I selected is an American male voice that is quite terse and tells the caller in no uncertain terms to hang up if they are a telemarketer.  Otherwise, press 0.  If the caller presses 0, (robo calls can't do that) then the call will ring on through to your phone.  If the caller doesn't press 0, it goes to the reject list or to a hold status for you to determine if it should be on the reject or accept list.

It's got lots of options on how you want to set it up.  Instructions are not good.  However, they have an 800 number you can call with questions.  I sure did.  When I called, I got a real live tech every time.  He would step me through how to so stuff, then he'd actually call me back to test it.  Very friendly and easy to understand when discussing, but I imagine would be hard to write all out in a manual.

The good thing is that you can play with it for a couple hours, you're very likely to work out what does what.
