I wrote an article on Farmed vs. Wild Salmon. I know the season is pretty far off, and frankly, sturgeon has been more on my mind, but once i educated myself between Farmed vs. wild, a lot made sense about what I was eating. You will never see salmon the same again! if you read on!! Here is a quick explanation in Emoji's

Farmed Salmon =  :smt010
Wild caught Salmon = :smt005

Years ago, before my kayak fishing years, I had a misconception of what salmon taste like. In fact, this misconception is what i think most people have regarding this highly regarded fish.

Honestly, I didn’t put much thought into it until 2012 when I caught my first kayak King Salon from Monterey bay –A wild one. I bled it, put it on ice, fillet it, and had it for dinner the following day. The impact was so dramatic it would change my perception of the food I was eating.

I have never caught a red salmon.

It's a Krill Salmon and it's bomb Tim. Nothing like it. It drips krill oil.  :smt007 :smt007

Your photo? Looks like cuts of salmon and tuna to me.

Krill salmon are not only tasty, but that shit gives them a ton of fight.

Cheers,
Brad

It's just a stock photo from the internet, but if you catch a wild salmon and compare it to a farmed salmon you can see the difference for yourself.
The best test is tasting the two.

The photos are not at all representative.  The red salmon is trimmed up czar cut and taken at such an angle that the visible fat is completely minimized.  On the other hand, the orange flesh king is showing a belly cut to maximize the visible fat.

You shouldn't have to resort to parlor tricks and sleight of hand if you have a good, valid point.

Fact is, fish will take their color from genetics and diet.  I've had wild salmon stuffed full with krill that are just as orange as the farmed salmon that has been gorging itself on beta carotene enriched Purina salmon chow pellets.  The wild salmon last summer were quite pale and mostly full of candlefish and other bait fish with no krill.

GMOs aren't bad for you either, not sure what that has to do with anything.  GMO tech has saved papayas, will probably save cavendish bananas, and feeds billions with corn and soy.

Antibiotics making their way into the food chain and farmed genes escaping into the gene pool are bigger concerns.

Since aquaculture has the potential to feed billions sustainably, it should be handled with science and facts, not smoke and mirrors, trick photography, and anti-science GMO scaremongering.

Agreed.  I did that once with a Costco salmon, let's just say the family doesn't eat salmon unless I catch one.

The best King Salmon I've ever had was the ones caught in Alaska.

Had farmed salmon two days ago that looked just like the orange one in the picture, tasted really good, but the toxins in the fat is something I was overlooking. Ate some red "sushi grade" wild salmon a couple weeks ago that had been frozen and it was very mushy and bland. Taste of fish is the result of many factors most of which do not show up in the color of the flesh.

Video was very interesting. Farmed seafood has be getting a bad reputation but surely it can be done in a non destructive, sustainable way.

Looking forward to continuing to try and harvest a wild kayak salmon this year and hope it will not have one of these viruses :(.

I think the viruses had spread down from BC to Northwest stock and if it's not here yet, it's only a matter of time.  I heard that it's not affecting human, so that's a good thing.  The bad news is they are lethal to the local stocks.  I am not scientific by any mean, but I do take certain perspective based on my own catches and some readings ( Salmon Confidential was a good documentary for me).

Until then, my obsession with salmon will consume me from the inside out until season opener, upon which the devil will grow bigger with every fail outing.
