We have a well worn path, right at the fence of our backyard, lots of deer, have seen a bobcat, possum, squirrels etc. Finally put a trail camera on this is from first night. Skunk went by twice. Any guesses what the fast moving animal is? I am thinking fox.

looks like an African Wild Bush dog.. but that would depend on where you are :smt044. Fox would be a good choice (black legs) if you're in the east bay.

I was thinking African Wild Bush Dog myself, but they have curly hair  :smt002. Hope we will eventually catch a shot of a mountain lion or two, maybe even a black bear they wander through sometimes, we are on Sacramento River, this is the main trail on the bank, about 30 feet up. With river so high path is well worn for this time of year can tell a lot more animals are passing by.

In that case, red fox is a good call I think (black forelegs). They are pretty common (although sometimes stealthy) inhabitant along the river. Good catch http://foxsurvey.ucdavis.edu/documents/30May2010_FinalReport_ForDistribution.pdf
As to hoping to "see" a lion.. are you sure?
Back when camera traps were new, a professor at Berkeley rigged a 16 mm movie camera to shoot single frames when triggered by a pedal. He put a clock in the background and put the thing on a mouse trail.  The object was to see what time of night they were active, and if lucky, get a picture of food items... each week he would check the camera and see 7-20 frames clicked off.. okay, good.  One day.. no frames. Next day, no frames.. next day.. no frames. He finally removed the film and developed it... last frame... a cat holding a mouse staring into the camera....!

Our neighbor two doors up had a mountain lion and cub in their yard several months ago, thinking they will move through slow, might get a picture. Spotted often in our neighborhood. Large deer herd and lots of pets around. Locals who have spent their lives here call them "Kit Fox",  looks like it may be red fox.

Try deploying  the camera so that it faces along the trail, as opposed to across the trail. You might get more, clearer pics.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

This is the shot I am working on, should work better, still don't know if I can get the chupacabra again, understand they are pretty smart and once you get a picture of there hind legs they know to avoid the area, if I do get it will make sure to share.  :smt003

Pick that miner's lettuce if nothing else  :smt006
Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.
