I was there the day before, making my first ever attempt at kayak fishing. Caught nothing, no bites at all. Managed to p*** off all the guys fishing from shore by trolling too close and getting snagged on the dock. I think I have a lot to learn about this kayak business..........

Hi Pat,

It was nice to "cruise" with you for a short distance and boy did the wind blow later in the day.  All in all still a good day of exercises and fishing.  When the wind started blowing, I couldn't get the line to stay in one speed, I later figured out that the wind was pushing the kayak at the right speed and all I had to do was go for the ride.

I like your downrigger setup and I'm sure it will pay off in the summer.  I also like your style of trolling above and below the water to cover two depths.  Hope to see at the SPR in the future.

I didn't catch anything today but that's OK.  San Pablo is all about the scenery.

Managed to p*** off all the guys fishing from shore by trolling too close

Reminds me of a time a friend, my roomate from med school, who knew I loved to fish, set me up with a "real pro" who had his own boat, etc.  I was on leave from working in the refugee camps and this trip was my friends vacation gift to me.

The stripers were boiling all around us outside Pacifica and we had a tank full of live anchovies.  They were breaking water at the side of the boat. Should have been heaven!  Only problem was this "pro" couldn't control his boat and we kept almost getting swamped at the surfline.  Then he'd throttle up, spin the boat around and tangle up all the lines.  Finally, he says, "This isn't working" and tells me to rig two rebel lures on rods and were going to troll...right close along the shoreline.  The same shoreline lined shoulder-to-shoulder with surf casters.  We're going along snagging everyother line out there.  I'm desperately trying to set them loose and he just tells me to cut them all off.  They are pelting us with rocks and beer cans from the shore.  Talk about P***!  I just wanted to hide down in the boat or jump overboard.  Turned out to be the fishing trip to Hell.

Shouldn't have surprised me when sometime later my friend told me that this guy, an ear, nose and throat surgeon at the local hospital lost his hospital privileges.  He'd accidently drilled into a guy's brain while doing ear surgery!
