I know there are quite a few Subaru guys on here so thought I'd ask here first.

For those of you that have purchased a new Subaru within past few years, did you purchase any extended warranty?  If so, what was the selling point that made you get it?

I typically tend to not buy any extended warranty, but just wondering if Subaru's may be worth getting.    Any input is appreciated.  Thanks!

Bought the 7 year 100k with no deductible for my Impreza and it fixed my leaky transmission and leaky oil pan after 4 years of having the car. It would have cost me around 5k to fix.

I got this because in my STI my fuel pressure regulator fucked up and it cost me around $3k to fix it after I had 70k on it and I was out of warranty

You can always buy the warranty from other dealers to find the cheapest one. Make sure it's the Subaru gold plus warranty. Don't buy some shitty third party one

That's a tough one. Most cars today come with a much better warranty than the past. I believe on average, an extended warranty runs 2,500.00 to 3k. Which in most cases you can actually haggle on pricing. ( Not much ) Keep in mind a lot has to do with mileage and time on cost of extended warranty.

On new cars, typically most items are covered 3 yrs or 36k mile and most powertrain items ( engine, transmission ) 5 yrs 60k. Some manufacturers are now going 7 yrs or 100k on powertrain. Emmision item can go even longer.

It was rare that I would see extended warranties used versus manufactures warranties. But, there are always those few cases.

Some of the strangest problems I would see that was not covered under extended or manufacture warranties was RODENT damage.
People who lived in rural and sometimes urban areas had rodents chew through wiring harnesses that were very expensive to repair.

We would recommend them to there car insurance coverage which typically covered it.

P.M. me if I can confuse you more.  :smt001

My '07 Subaru Outback Sport developed a head gasket leak at 95K, past the warranty date.  $3K later it's not leaking, it's burning a ton of oil each month (like at least a quart per month).  Would have been nice to have had it covered... :smt012

Damn that sucks bro. I believe car shouldn't break down before they hit 100,000 miles and manufacturer should cover this ( I think some do, Hyundai?) We didn't buy extended warranties on our 2 Toyotas (RAV4 and Tacoma). They're both roughly 160K miles now with NO major service done. I'm a Toyota guy and reliability is always my deciding factor to which vehicle to buy. But then again, they put so much technology in cars nowadays that something is bound to break down.

As far as burning oil... to anyone that has there oil changed by anyone other than themselves, always, always check your oil level after having it done. Most oil change places rely on the pumps that give digital read outs and are sometimes in a hurry to get to next car and don't check dipstick. Running your car on a low oil level definitely reduces the life of your engine and will cause car to burn excessive oil prematurely.

Sometimes it can be a manufacture defect as well. ( burning oil ) Honda had a recall on some accords where the rings were bad and car consumed oil. Replaced a few engines for free to a few customers.

I was told by a (different) mechanic that Subarus generally do consume oil after a head gasket replacement.  And that if you say had it done at the dealership, they send you home with a bottle of stop leak.  Stop leak cant fix whatever is wrong with my engine, it's burning way too much oil.

I recently helped a couple of my family members purchase a couple of subies ( 1 Crosstrek, 1 Legacy).  I suggested both get extended warranties because neither are mechanically inclined, and as with all newer cars, there are so many sensitive (expensive) electronic components like the Eyesight collision avoidance system.  I did my homework first, and the dealership matched warranty pricing that other dealerships were offering on the internet. Good luck, they are great cars.  I'm sure the eyesight system already saved them from a couple of accidents.

Funny you say that. Most people don't realize that a lot of those systems are tied into your windshield. If you have a windshield replaced, you have to have your system re-calibrated. Well at least that was some of the newer Honda's.

I wouldn't purchase shit from Subaru. They don't even stand by their regular warranty or any of their faulty products.

I bought a new Outback in 2011 and did not purchase the extended warranty.  It  has 72,000 miles on it now and I haven't had a single problem except for the Takata Air Bag recall, which was fixed a few weeks ago.  Subaru provided me a rental car (new Hyundai Santa Fe) at no charge during the period they were waiting for the recall parts.  I had the rental car for about 8 weeks at no charge.

Sounds like you need a new mechanic, I took TLW's 08 used to us in for a head gasket job at 80,000 and it don't loose a drop of oil between changes... now I know the guy that did it and know he took the head to a machine shop and had it gone through (cost an extra $100) but you'd be crazy not to have them at least checked at the machine shop if there off. Could be a bad valve or dirty valve seat.

My $0.02 is buy a bottle of "seafoam" put half of it in your gas tank and about 45 minutes or 20-30 miles before your oil change put the other half in your crank case ( right in the oil) it will help clean out all the build up an engine can get from daily use. I do this at least once a year on all my vehicles.

I buy the 7 year/100,000 mile warranty for my Subarus even though I only keep 'em 4 years.  The warranty is prorated and I get a refund of the portion not used.  I highly recommend.  My last Subaru needed a new engine due to oil consumption.  I didn't pay a dime and even got a loaner car for the two days they had it.

But, when you go to negotiate the warranty, know that they are highly over priced.  Figure that you can get as much as 50% off their asking price for the warranty.  The way I word it is; the finance guy who fills out the DMV paperwork will try to talk you into the warranty.  He'll use scare tactics, show you a computer, say there are 7 on board and the cheapest is about $2K.  At that time, I tell him that I don't want a car that needs an extended warranty, deal is off.  Talk about shit hitting the fan!  The salesman comes back in, wanting to know what the problem is.  I tell him the finance guy told me I needed the warranty or I'll end up paying thousands more for some computers that fail a lot.  At which time the finance guy denies saying it.  I then go into my 'you-calling-me-a-liar?' rant.  After all, I didn't just make this up; you said it!  We'll finally settle on a very low cost for the warranty.  Once I got it for free, they were that sure I was gonna walk and they needed to sell the car.

Also, I go though Costco.  With Costco, you get the car at fleet rates and there's no real dickering about the price of the car itself.   They showed me how much I was saving going though Costco and I had to admit, I got the car, 3 of them now, for cheaper than I figured I could negotiate on my own.  Go Costco!!

So I ended up getting the 7yr/70K warranty (with $100 copay) for $1100.  Not sure if that is a good deal or not, but I figure with all the new gadgets on the car these days, I don't mind having a little peace of mind.  I have 90 days to cancel if I change my mind though.

Thanks for everyone's input on this!
