Insightful question. I don't recall this topic ever coming up before...at least, not posed as a question. I'm not quite sure how to answer it. Or, more acurately, I'm struggling to put it into words. Because there's so many different ways that members contribute on so many different levels! It's kind of like a cult. With lack of direction. But that's the undefinable characteristic that makes this such a great group. People contribute in whatever way they feel like--there isn't an obligation to share anything, really. "Just be yourself; everyone else is already taken."

Not that I'm in your area so my opinion can be brushed of as what works fir us NWKA'ers up north but I'd say

1 part kayak fisherman
1 part friend
2 parts be patient
1 part be a safety pest
2 parts it's all for relaxation
10 parts have fun

Place all the ingredients into a kayak and blend well over an aquatic species rich environment, rinse, filet, eat (cooked or not your choice) wash down with your favorite beverage (adult or not we don't judge)

Repeat as often as possible and teach as many as you can!

Lots of great responses from everyone!

Be yourself, unless yourself resembles BMB in any way shape or form.

Post pics! Inspire us to get out more.

Find a need and fill it. There are lots of guys who do lots of work behind the scenes of events, HOW, AOTY etc.

This is what I had in mind when I started composing this thread, I probably could've revised portions to better reflect what sort of information I am seeking (not that each response wasn't insightful, and good heartfelt feedback). Participating in events like HOW, or assisting during tournaments (if there is a need) are a few ways I thought I may be able to get more involved and contribute to some of the great causes that NCKA backs. If I want to pitch in at the next HOW event for example, should I just be monitoring the tournaments and events forum for posts about upcoming events or is there somebody to contact?

I also thought that this may serve a few newer members well.

Our HOW Events schedule will generally be posted in our subforum.  Right now we are tentatively targeting Feb 25 for our first 2017 event at San Pablo Reservoir, just need to work on getting EBMUD on board with us, which shouldn't be a problem.  Remember that volunteering for HOW is a great thing, although relatively thankless.  Alternatively you can be in touch with either myself or RacinRob and we'll make sure you're informed of our events.  You can also sign up for our HOW volunteer email list by clicking the link at the bottom of my signature.  I generally only send those a few weeks before an event so they're pretty rare.

I'm a newb, but when I joined this forum I posted up asking about camp far west intel, I had a shitty sit inside kayak and was saving pennies for a Thresher. Several people posted great info, and RacinRob straight out offered me his Thresher to take camping! I'd never been in a real kayak, didn't know how to use it or care for it or make sure it came back the way I got it, but that attitude really stuck with me, both the knowledge (intel) and kayak loan.

So I think the willingness to give, be it time, equipment, loaning equipment, knowledge (which there's a metric f*** ton of here) and even a when people give each other a hard time in jest is what makes this place as a whole great.

I don't know the recipe for the perfect member, but the way I see it the more you give to others, in any category, is what you get out of it, and obviously it benefits the community as a whole. I have to step my game up this year for sure, being a veteran, HOW is on my list!

Just be yourself. A lot of us are friends on other social media platforms, and we have groups or "safe spaces" for members who have been unfriended and such. With the elections over for now, group membership should start to slow down.  :smt003 :smt044

I do suck!

I didn't catch any fish last year or this year yet...neither from kayak, nor from shore. Despite fishing a couple dozen times or more. I used to limit or get close to the limit almost every time.

Mostly I fish Quarry Lakes or Shadow cliffs just because they are the closet. I've been going to QL in the afternoons after my naps. I did take the kayak to the delta last year, near Tracy. No fish but then it was a very hot day.

Anyway I've been researching, watching videos and talking to people. This year more fishing and more fish!

I'd love to go to the ocean but I need to find a wet suit that'll fit over my beer belly. I think I have everything else. Radio, pfd, nets.

So because I suck is there no hope for me?

PS, I take take back, I did catch fish. Went out of a party boat and caught 10 rock cod and a ling.

Oh and soon I hope to get a rack for my truck so I can take the kayak camping this year.

Never say die!

I haven't given up yet, still plugging away. I am working on getting more dialed in. I have 30 years of fishing stuff. Organized that.
