Dear NCKA Bruddahs,
I was having problems with my Shimano Chronarch CI4+ 150HG baitcasting reel for some time and on my last rockfish outing with Alex Bulldog at Pebble Beach, the reel just froze and I was not able to use it. When I came home that day, I took the spool off and noticed that there was a crack on the outer part of the spool which caused the reel to not be able to crank.
I called Shimano American International in Irvine, CA and explained my problem. The technician told me to ship my reel to the Service Dept. in Irvine and I told him that it past the warranty period and he told me to just pack up the reel with cracked spool and ship it to them. I asked if I needed to send  copy of the  original purchase receipt which was over 2 years ago and he told me that he did not need that.
So, I packed up my reel about 2-3 weeks ago and shipped it out. I tried calling about a week ago and I was told that they had received my reel and it takes about 2-3 weeks for The Service Dept. to turn around a service order.
Well, a few days ago, I received a UPS shipping confirmation that Shimano was sending my reel back. So this morning UPS delivered my reel as when I opened it up, I see that Shimano had completely repaired my Chronarch reel to new. New spool, repaired braking and spool assembly system with new parts and at no charge!!!!Wow, I was stoked, I have a brand new used reel that was completely repaired and restored to new and I was not charged anything!!!
Does anyone know if this is common practice for Shimano reels that's malfunctioned or broken after the one year warranty is already expired?
Also do any of you own a Chronarch CI4+150HG bait casting reel? I would be interested to talk with you about the braking system and other parts of the using this reel.
Had to send some pics the reel, it's a little over 2 years old and looks almost brand new!!!!!
This is good start for the New Year!!!I am totally grateful!!!!
Aloha,
Michael

I had a different but equally impressive experience with Shimano on an out of warranty reel.  I thought it was just because of my sterling personality...    :smt003

This one of the reasons I use Shimano reels for the last 35 years. Its seems they do this service on there high end reels but I don't know about the lower end stuff. I also have Chronarch CI4+ reels but I use them for bass fishing "freshwater bass". For saltwater I use Calcutta 401 TE. I like the breaking and casting system on the CI4+ and I use these reels for casting light baits because of the adjustability factor. I think its not the best platform for saltwater reel even though they say because there is no metal that it is. Maybe back country saltwater like the flats for redfish or trout maybe snook. Anyway not my choice for rockfish with big heavy weights.

Hey Reelfish,
After the repair on my Chronarch, I am going use it as a freshwater reel, mainly for trout right now. I just re-spooled it with some 8# mono and recently bought a Okuma SST Kokanne 7'6" trout rod.
Yeah, I was lured in with the carbon fiber body and thought that it would be a great saltwater reel. For $269 that's  going to be an expensive trout reel.
I just started fishing in fresh water this December 2016, because the ocean was too rough or windy. Mel (Fishing Addict) gave me some timely advice about how to topline with Ralapas and recommended the longer more sensitive 7'6" trout rod. You can really see the lure vibrating at the rod tip as it is moving through the water.
Pm'd you as I wanted to talk to you in person about he Chronarch reel
Mahalo,

I've had great luck with Shimano service. On more than one occasion I've sent them my well used, but still functioning reels for the ~$30 service and they've sent back brand spankin new reels.

That's good to hear shimano is backing their equipment! I have noticed most top brands will back their stuff even out of warranty. If they value their customers and you have a legitimate claim they usually always hook you up!

I agree shimano is awesome 👍

I sent them a broken teramar rod (section of the tip broke off) on Friday. They got it on Monday and by Monday evening, I got a shipping confirmation that they were sending me another rod.

Arrived a day later and got a brand new upgraded teramar rod. The one I purchased last year was the old model and it was 90 bucks from West Marine. The new one is about double the cost...scored :)

Shipping was 20 bucks but not complaining :)
