Question: Is it legal to sell skulls and bones from small mammals such as fox, skunk, raccoon, opossum, coyote, badger and bobcats? (Kayla M.)

Answer: No, it is “unlawful to sell or purchase a bird or mammal found in the wild in California” (Fish and Game Code, section 3039). However, “products or handicraft items made from furbearing mammals and nongame mammals lawfully taken under the authority of a trapping license may be purchased or sold at any time.”

Interesting timing on this. A friend of mine asked me for a real deer skull for a project she is working on. I was going to see if any NCKA hunters have one. I take it this means I can't offer anything in trade or cash for one?

Huh?? So it's illegal unless it's made into something and only taken with a trapping  license??

No restrictions on those, but only if taken with a license...

I think it's a partial fox skull.   Check out http://infinitespider.com/animal-skull-id/

Yeah I'm thinking maybe coyote based off this. I wish it was whole but oh well! I hope it's wild and not a domestic dog.

Depending on where you found it, and how big it is, domestic dog (like german shepherd) or coyote.  Foxes would be around 4.5 inches max and have  flat back of the skull (not sagital crest).  Grey foxes have this cool kind of violin shaped ridge on the top of the cranium..

What about human skulls?

If you are genuinely curious about the answer to this question, then ask me in person some time. I used to prepare and sell anatomy and histology specimens in Budapest.

That is the sagittal crest where the jaw muscles attach.

I was trying to figure out what animal has eyes in the top center of their heads where these sockets at the top of the skull are but now I'm thinking it's just more broken than I thought and that's not where the eyes go?
