I posted this on the members only page too but I'm reposting here as well. I apologize for the double post.

The weather seems to be cooperating for Friday at Half Moon Bay so I'm going to go out and try to get some crabbing and fishing done. I could use some company.

Thanks!

FYI
According to the quarantine hotline rockcrab is closed North of Pigeon Pt.

I saw on a previous thread that you harvested them recently.

I found out this information today while checking for any mussel closures.

Don't want anyone getting ill.

In his previous thread, he caught rock crab up in Bodega Bay.  On the CDFW website, rock crab is open statewide with warnings to not eat the guts.

"The recreational fishery for all rock crab species is open statewide. North of Pigeon Point, San Mateo County the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) advises that consumers not eat the viscera (internal organs, also known as "butter" or "guts") of crabs. The viscera usually contain much higher levels of domoic acid than crab body meat."

The HotLine 1 (800) 553-4133 only states not to consume rock crabs North of Pigeon Pt in San Mateo county.

Since he recently harvested them in Bodega the warning was for his upcoming trip to HMB.

It's up to the harvester to decide what information they deem to be accurate.

I kept and ate one from HMB last night (thought the warning was for further north). Actually enjoyed the texture and flavor of the meat over the dungeness but it may have been because there was less of it. Didn't eat the guts of either and feel fine today.

Forgive the thread jack rnrgeek hope you made it out and harvested some seafood today.

Always good information/ reminder to check before consuming. I was unaware of this current one and got spooked while reading due to having a recent boil and giving out "crab bags" at work but was soon to find that it didn't affect dungies.. # saved in my phone now!

Anyways hope the conditions held and you were able to make it otw. I'll msg. you next week and see if the 6 or 7th works.

Here is CDPH's most recent press release regarding rock crabs:
http://www.cdph.ca.gov/Pages/NR16-070.aspx
DFG site also says that fishery is open. Can't find exactly when they opened it, however. They need to coordinate better on their messaging. I used to call the hotline for years before harvesting mussels, but I find now that the website has more updated and thorough information.

For what it's worth, I harvested a bunch of huge red rock crabs form HMB a few days ago and picked 1.5 lbs of meat out and made crabs cakes for the extended family. We are all fine. I always "liveback" my crabs before cooking so there is no chance of the viscera contaminating the meat. Flavor is much, much better as well and it requires much less water and salt. I highly recommend processing crabs this way.
