On the water at 7:45 and it was freezing cold. Morning start off slow, just one small released planter about 15 mins in, then quiet till about 9 and I land two nice ones back to back. Finished my limits around noon and release 5 smaller planters in between. Off the water at 1. Nice to met you P Sherman, hope u got your limits too. Trolled kastmasters, rapala j-7, and needlefish today

Nice job.

I got on the water around 12:30pm. Saw Toansta717 with his limit of trout. Nice meeting you.

Caught 3 dinks in the first 1.5 hours so I threw them back. I finally caught two keepers in the last 15 minutes of fishing, off the water by 2:30pm.

Nice job Taon and John. Thanks for the report , pics . With cod season closing, its all about the Cliffs. Maybe vaqueros in a rental if no time for the kayak.

Haven't been to the cliffs in a while. I left salt water in my hobie last outing . So now there are salt crystals everywhere . Need to hose it out completely .

Im new to this forum. I was introduced to this forum by P-Sherman when I met him Saturday by the docks. Hi again P-Sherman!

Question:

What is your set-up for trolling? I was watching this guy on an aluminum boat catch many Lassens with his downrigger going down about 25ft. How do you troll deep without a downrigger?

Thanks,

David

you can use a dipsy diver, drop with banana weights and lead core.  problem is sc is a small lake so its tough to maneuver if you have a lot of line out deep and are unfamiliar with it. there are a couple of spots where it comes up quick.  i use a downrigger when i feel like it, but generally do better toplining.

If i had to troll deep, i would prefer a downrigger.

I think your going to need a down rigger if you want to fish deep, I just made a poor mans down rigger by chopping an old saltwater rod and using a 1.5-2 pound ball to get my line down. This pic was my old set up before I chopped my older rod. If you don't mind spending 70 bucks, the Scotty 1073 in a good downrigger

You can also use deep diving lures like the Rapala Tail Dancer TD 9.  A pedal kayak makes trolling easy.

+1 on the Rapala Tail Dancers.
Don't let the size of the TDD9 scare you, either. I've caught plenty of 10" dinks off of the 3 1/2" lure.
A TDD9 pulled with braid will run 20' down on just a 60' setback.

Go Blue.

My apologies...an 80' setback will get you 20' down.

FIshingAddict is right about the Rapala Tail Dancers, add a 1/4 or 1/2 oz weight will drop it down further plus 60-80 ft set back. On pedal kayak, I'll even set it back up 100-120ft, just watch where you're trolling. In Shadow Cliffs, it's usually picking the right lure. Kastmasters is one of my best "Go To" lure.

Thanks for the great tips, everyone!

Not looking to spend much money right now so I think I will try the TD9 and braided line for starters. Will use a 3-way swivel with weights to get it even lower. A fat Lassen has my name on it. If that doesnt work, Ill throw out the old powerbait.

I might go to Shadowcliffs this Thursday. If I do, Ill let you all know how I did.

Be sure to get the Tail Dancer Deep 09 model...UV Green Tiger has filled its share of stringers for me. Those Lassen trout also love them some garlic scent. [emoji106]

Setbacks on braid:
@ 50' = 16' Down
@ 100' = 21'
@ 150 = 24'
@ 200' = 26'

Go Blue.

Sorry for the quick change of subject, but i've gotten skunked out there twice, once at horseshoe and once at Shadow Cliffs. So far i've been trying to troll what I think is referred to as "topline" style. No weights, just the lure and about 10yards of line from pole to lure out the back. Am i going about this all wrong or should there be more line like 40 yards between pole and lure? I kept my speed fairly low maybe 2mph. There were other guys hammering them out there supposedly doing the same "topline" technique.

Any suggestions are appreciated.
