Shelter Cove ab opener

Thursday's fishing report in Eureka's Times Standard talked about the hot bite that turned on last Saturday (3/17) afternoon at the Cove - a dozen boats enjoyed salmon biting right off the beach including a 20 #er boated!  That was the day after Asa and I had luck at the Bell Buoy.  This weekend the swell was to have been 9-10', but today it's dropped unexpectedly to 6-8' --- guess we should've maybe hooked up, MBYakker...     Anyway, I'm trying to keep myself occupied so I can make it through the week.  Next Sunday is the abalone opener.  If it's at all flat I'll be at the Cove for salmon trolling and ab diving.  The real prize comes in May when we can keep some rockfish on the yaks, but an ab dive with some spear fishing and a possible salmon on the troll is sounding real good.  Anyone who wants to make the trip for a Sunday hang-out should be rewarded with at least white meat if the ocean is decent...  I'll post conditions throughout the week.  If the ocean's sweet and I can bribe my wife with a shopping spree or something I may try to come down Saturday to troll salmon that day and stay the night.

I get the chills just thinking about a northcoast trip that involves fishing for Eel River steelhead on the last day of the season (March 31), then drive over the hill to The Cove and fish for Salmon AND dive for abalone on Sunday!!!
Only thing really holding me back is two fantasy baseball drafts (one on Friday and one on Saturday). How lame is that?! Well, that and the fact my WAF would undoubtedly drop into the negative.

You have me tempted but I spent all of last weekend in the Mountains (awsome spring skiing) and need some WAF so I can go out on opening day for Salmon around here on April 7.  I will keep checking your reports and maybe drag the wife and family (W&F) up there if it is too good to pass up.  They would have to be willing of course.

That sounds totally do-able. 7 to 9ft isn't bad and the wind looks like it'll die down by the wknd.

That sounds totally do-able...  but I'd bet it changes a bit between now and then.  Sunday late afternoon is the tide I want to dive, so I may go down Sunday morning, troll for salmon then dive around 4:30. 

It's not sounding epic, so you may want to save your WAF/money/free-time for a later opportunity. 

I'll post again before the weekend when we have a better forecast to look at.

Let's go fishing & ab dive 

Today's fishing report in the Times Standard says there were some fish caught last Saturday (24th), but only one boat out Sunday (sounds like not SO many fish were caught Saturday maybe...).  That's all the word I have out of the Cove, so maybe the salmon are biting, maybe they're not...  As for the ab opener, it sounds like it'll be flat, but windy.  There's a chance I won't be able to make it down, and if I do it looks like I'll pull in some time Sunday mid-morning...
