CDEC is very controversial data. Reservoir elevation levels are unsettled science. Don't trust the scientists.

Archie, are you joking? Please explain how such a simple measurement can be controversial....

Pretty sure he's alluding to how the scientific method is taking a back seat to faith/what one wants to believe in today's society.

Yes, I was joking. It was probably an innapropriate place to put a joke, but yeah... I'm pretty damn tired of "My unininformed opinion is equal or greater than your hyperinformed opinion".

Anyhow, CDEC is great! DWR has done a great service to us by providing a place where the general public can access gauge data. It isn't the easiest to use, but it sure is a powerful tool for us anglers .

I worked for years providing the data for the American River water shed from Ice House, Union Valley and Loon Lakes.  Measurements were established by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture)  and I was sent every other year on the proper techniques on how to establish, read and record hydrography data.  We use both a calibrated stick in the water to measure as well as pressure transducers under the water that measures the depth by pressure reading.  The latter allowed for instantaneous as well as remote reading, with the former used to establish and calibrate with an actual eyes-on reading.

The data has to accurate because the company I worked at, SMUD, used the data for managing the electrical generation from these reservoirs.  Also, everybody has a vested interest in this water after it runs through our turbines and they darn will count every gallon they possibly can.

There's just too many people who have a serious investment in water these days to not collect accurate data.

This is a cool site I use at work a lot during the rain season.  It predicts peak flows and timing at a handful of gages. In my experience the timing is fairly accurate, but the actual peak flows are not usually spot on.
