I'm looking into installing a compass on my Thresher 140. I plan to mount my FF on the trax for easier reach. That leaves the FF pod area open for the compass. I still plan to put the FF battery in the pod and I'm wondering if that will cause problems. Anyone install a compass near their electronics?

Brunton 58 or Ritchie. You can easily pick them up online.

It's done on boats quite often however boats generally use a larger compass with better dampening, etc. Shouldn't have a big issue but test it out before mounting.  Watch the dial as you place it closer to its mounting position & see if there's a deviation

i have brunton 58 and love it. Just remember that it is a direct reading one, which *is* confusing for some (there are several threads on this here)

Lick your finger and hold it up. Wind always comes form the west. Paddle to the right. See you in China!  :smt044 :smt044

Ordinary 2" compass mounted on plastic, Gooped to a flat place where I can read it.  Mostly use it for quick reference to see how far I've gotten turned around while tying knots.

Maybe I can use a compass I already have to help me figure out if the electronics will affect it. I'm not sure I want to buy one just to test it out. I'd like to have a compass because sometimes the GPS is less than accurate showing my direction of travel. I'd also like to be able to tell how much I am swingng at anchor. Of course for emergency navigating as well.

Gps, at rest, will not show you an accurate heading.  At slow speeds, the heading will sway quite a bit unless you have a higher-end gps with external antenna/fluxgate compass.

I finally got around to installing a compass. I used a mounting plate from a Scotty downrigger angle bracket. It should be out of the way and hopefully close enough for my old eyes to still be able to read it.  :smt044

This. I also keep one in my pfd pocket just in case.

As you can see in my photos I decided to mount mine on the center hatch. I chose a direct read compass. I figure I'll put my destination into my gps and then use the compass to follow the course heading shown on the screen. I hope if I can get headed in the right direction and look for a landmark I won't have to stare at the compass.
