Is the Daiwa Luna 253 enough reel to handle sturgeon? Plan on buying a yak soon for some Napa River fishing in the American Canyon area. I have a Shimano charter special and an old fenwick I use for party boat rock fish/lingcod but the problem is I cant cast with that reel worth a damn where as I can send something to the moon with the Luna 253. I wont be needing to cast far off a yak for soaking bait for sturgeon but would like to be able to cast a little bit so I'm not limited to fishing directly under me. I also have a Abu 3000 but I think one good sturgeon would toast the drag in that thing.

For the smaller sturgeon it's capable, the sturgeon with shoulders will tear that reel up.id go a minimum of the 300 if going with the luna
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Ok makes sense. I seen a few oversized sturgeons being caught from shore in the area I'm thinking of. Guess I'll have to use my Shimano Charter special.

I've landed oversize sturgeon on that reel, as well as lots of rockies and salmon. But I did hot rod it with carbon smooth drags and Cal's grease. On a kayak you don't need much reel unless you are fishing pelagics.(you just get drug around) From shore you better have spectra if they run.

I use a luna 300 on a trevala ML, perfect for sturgeon...always seems too light a rod, but works out perfectly.
