Saturday , we went spearing out of Breakwater in Monterey

We met at 830 am for some spearfishing action in Monterey and the weather was decent and already a wind picking up. We paddled out and did dives anywhere from 35-55 feet. Not many fish out. I believe they were holed up because of an upcoming high swell period. the fish we did find were kelpies , olives and some blues.

we all got a few fish and i went to the breakwater to freedive without gun to see how the reefs wee doing there. there was a lot of red lettuce looking stuff growing all over the pinnacles and reefs. perfect for fish to hide in.

not many fish out.

saw a couple of guys kayaki fishing in blue kayaks , dont know how they did as we were out til about 2pm.

overall, great day for fish as they were hidden: ) i tried out my open muzzles again and they worked well. the reel gun i have is combersome and calicos were teasing me just off mcabee beach. i saw one calico which was leaving as i touched bottom and he looked to be over 20" easily.

visibility was low pretty much everywhere but better than a day at work: )

Were you diving to 55ft? Or diving in 55ft of water? I would assume you mean tank dives at 55ft but not really sure.

I wonder if the guys in kayaks were "targetting" calicos....

Hi PK, we were diving to 55 feet freediving. I actually use my FF on my yak to find pinnacles to dive on. Its been a long time since I have done any scuba diving. Its just too much work hauling all the gear around. Freediving you can cover so much more and no need for refills granted you are limited to one breath hold per dive.

i dont know what those guys were targetting , my wife wanted to see if she could get a halibut and had a few strong bites over the sand but nothing stuck. In the end it was one octopus which was released. it kind of released itself i think.
