Hello everyone. I will be traveling to Buenos Aries, Argentina in January and I am going to be doing some fishing. I have already got in touch with some guys down there on an Argentine kayak fishing forum and many people have graciously offered to take me fishing and even lend me kayaks! We kayak fishermen are brothers all around the world regardless of country of origin, it is just amazing. I want to attempt some Golden Dorado fishing in the rivers but I will also be doing kayak fishing in the ocean for certain. Although many of them have offered lend me gear as well I don't want to be dependent on any one to be able to go fishing so I need a good travel rod(and reel to match). I have been looking around on the internet and haven't been able to find much of a selection. Frankly it is a little surprising. I was wondering if any one had any recommendations of rod choice or websites that should visit. I have seen an Okuma SST 4 piece spinning rod that looks decent. It was 8'6'', rated for up to 20 lb test and up to 1.5 oz lures but I'm thinking I might want to match a casting rod with an Abu Garcia reel and some braided line to kinda have a swiss army knife rod that will work equally well dropping bait in the oceans and casting lures in the rivers. Any suggestions are welcome. Thank You!!!

I've taken up to 8ft. one piece rods to Mexico many times. Just get a good rod tube and use a rod(s) that is best suited for the types of fish you're after.

I've purchased travel rods before and most are a piece of shit. The extra money you pay for your rod tube is worth it.

So it was checked luggage? Did it count as one of your pieces of checked luggage or was it in addition to your regular allowance?

I've broken more travel rods that I care to discuss.  I used Okuma Nomad's for a while until one exploded on a big tuna.  I used Tsunamis for a while, the older ones lasted, the newer ones broke.

In general, a full rod tube is going to cost you for extra oversized luggage on international flights.  There are some exceptions to this (Alaska Airlines to Mexico).

Depends on the airlines check with them ahead of time to see what their policy is on oversized luggage.

My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

I've broken no less than 3 of those Tsunami Travel rods, and 2 Tsunami's that were 1 piece.

Now, if you want to take your chances with some, I got about 3-4 in my garage that you're welcome to.

At least 3 just folded during what I consider normal use.  On one single piece rod, a client high sticked a fish, but it was a relatively small bonito that I wouldn't have thought would have broken a rod.

I appreciate the information. It might not be a bad idea for me to take one as an extra just in case. Thanks for the offer. I'm thinking im going to bring a 2 piece 8 foot ugly stik lite with an abu reel.

Be very careful... a friend of mine lost over $1,500 worth of fly fishing gear on an Argentina trip when the airline "lost" it during the return flight. He didn't have receipts for all the gear, so it became a giant and expensive PITA...

I have and use Diawa Saltiga and Ardito and have had no problems.
Have both casting and spinning and they perform well

Give these rods a look. http://www.charkbait.com/cs/csrods-Travel-Rods.htm
I liked the look of the surf explorer for opportunistic fishing on my travels, but they have some nice heavier options.
Good luck!
