Sounds like he was fishing in a sit-in kayak, swamped and unable to bail.  Definite advantage fishing on a sit-on-top kayak.

if it was a SOT maybe his hatch was open or his drain plug was out. Sometimes I leave my middle hatch open so I can get to my tackle box. Either way glad he's safe. Wonder if he had a radio and company.

My uncle didn't totally sink his sit inside but he did flip it and fill it with water and stood straight up and he couldn't get it flipped back over. He was by himself but luckily in a lake and not the ocean. He still had to swim over a mile back to shore pushing his yak though. I don't think he even had a life jacket on. Lucky he didn't end up drowning.

Not when they are filled with pool noodles!  Keep your hatches closed, plug in and avoid holing from Great Whites.

Strange that the story says dense fog hampered the rescue, but it looks clear in the picture. If the fog really was dense, I wonder how long he was in the water. And how come there are 5 people in the water?

It's Monterey County....You should see the lightbulb brigade.

Vessel Assist waited outside of Moss Landing with a dead body for four hours a couple weeks ago. Monterey sherrifs and Monterey fire were on the dock arguing about god knows what juridstiction questions.  Coast Guard was fed up with them.  CG finally cleared Vessel Assist and sent out themselves to recover the body.....

Having said all that, I'd rather see an over-response than an under response for a rescue scenario.....

There was a dense fog sitting a few hundred yards off shore for most of tuesday. It is probably in reference to hampering any type of aerial recon. It's difficult to see a person in the water from shore. Helicopters and planes make the search much easier when we can use them.
