A thought came over me during a long day in the water.  Can you use a sabiki to catch bait after you have a salmon onboard?

As long as you cut off all but 2 of the hooks and pinch the barbs on the remaining 2, yes.

My guess would be no.

I know when I'm rockfishing, I catch all my bait fish before hand for this very reason.
If I really need to use sabiki, I cut off all hooks but 2.

But for salmon, not only do you have 2 hook limitation, you need to use barbless circle hook.
And I don't know if they make barbless circle hook sabiki.

Ya, thanks for both answers.  That's what I thought as well, 'was wondering if there are different rules for those classified as unlimited fish.  Thanks!

But doesn't it have to be a circle hook?... unless you are trolling?  That's how I understand it.
and... I don't know if you can troll with a sabiki. :smt003

They don't have to be circle hooks unless all of the following apply:

1.  You have tipped them with bait;
2.  You are not trolling; and
3.  You are south of Horse Mountain (near Shelter Cove, Humboldt County)

Specifically a size 22 CA salmon legal barbless circle hook.  The point has to go back at a 90 degree angle directly at the shaft.

Thanks. That's good to know.  So, as long as you don't put a bait on... you can use 2 hooks on sabiki.

No bait, two hooks, and have to get rid of the barbs.

Or just take your salmon to shore, put on ice then go about your business.

It depends on where you are fishing. Yes, south of Point Conception.

It is my favorite way to find bait! Put a sinker, half ounce is fine, I use one ounce a lot, keeps tangles down with flipping bait fish. Cast out, put rod in holder and paddle. You will know when you go em ;)
