Live your life, the way you want to be remembered. Don't have any regrets, we only get this one dance to make it count. Start at your eulogy, and work backwards.

You don't need a fish finder, but it sure can help.

GPS is an important tool even if only for return navigation when conditions quickly go bad.

For rockfish/lingcod, not really necessary. But even then, if you want to catch baitfish, a ff can be a huge advantage.
I don't like stuff that sucks.

I should have pointed out that I said when conditions turn bad, not if, because it is going to occur as you spend more time on the salt.

Yes.  Easily.

That said, it will enhance your experience to have one.

I purchased castable ffs.  Fish hunter 3d and deeper pro+.
Neither helped for rockfishing.  Baitfish yes.
Nowadays, I use it just to map the depth (bathymetric) and temperature.   But you can very easily get that data off of Internet.

Before testing one of these, I thought it was going to change how I fish.  But sadly, no.  I wish I had spent that money on a quality rod instead.

By the way, got any fish? We tore them  up this weekend, but no keeper stripers, and dont like eating bass out of the delta.

No...you can't get by.    You need one for sure.    Even The Natives  used them 10,000's of years ago, but they wear made of cheaper electronical parts and sucked bad for them.  Some years they even almost   Starved to death because of the fish finder  malfunctioned often
Common sense is not common.

Other than finding fish cloud, depth and temperature, you may consider other factors.  GPS is a good one (especially in a cloudy day, or you're not sure which part of the land that you are coming from.  Kayaking takes a lot of effort, so getting the direction right at the first time will save you a lot of energy) and you can use it to meter how deep is your setup (given that the setup is large enough, i.e. 2 lbs lead or something similar to that size).  The GPS portion is also good to track how far you've been on the water and tell others where you are.

You don't need a large battery, something around 4AH will last OTW time for most people.

I strongly recommend one.  Having a unit with more advance technology is nice (i.e. side scan), but absolutely not necessary.
