Im thinking about using something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/201610277122

I don't know if it would be able to handle the torque of a 7'+ rod on the troll, but figured I would get some opinions from you guys.

Buy and try is my conclusion...

I'm too cheap for Ram mounts and plan on using a simple fabricated pole holder.

Unless you want to donate your rod and reel to the drink I would advise against using that for a rod holder. I've seen rail mounted rod holders snap their single screw from fish.

I suggest something like http://www.austinkayak.com/products/1557/Sea-lect-Designs-Flush-Mount-Rod-Holder-with-Cap.html (find one with 30 degree angle).

I've had my pole came off twice on scotty gear head.  Both time the gear head, rod mount, and rod are all in tact, but all three jumped off the rail.

Always have a safety line from the reel to the boat

Spend the $$$ youll be better off. I have the scotty Rocket Launchers with slip discs, love them, way stronger then the ram rod 2008's I had the ball system ram uses slips under pressure.... But Ram does make a heavy duty style holder that they put on the Jackson Kraken's.... Id go with either one of those... the rail system is garbage ive heard / seen / experienced them popping off the rails while trolling or a big take down.. as stated before, all of these rod holders come with a leash mount, so if you are worried they might end up in the drink, leash em to your boat / yak!

2 Rocket Launchers with flush mounts AND slip discs ran me @ $30... for the time of your home made ones and the possible headache in the future, you are better off spending the extra $$ just my 2 cents...

I do both leash and noodles.  The noodles help when you forget to leash the rods for whatever reason.
