There I was at the Long Beach Fred Hall Show when I spotted a wall-full of the prized Live Jigs. Thinking I'd hit the jackpot, I loaded up on the discount priced baits. I innocently remarked to the cashier, "Blowing out the last of the Live Jigs, eh?" and got a welcome news in return.

Megabait is back! Little to nothing about the Live Jigs has been changed - same name, same packaging.

The Megabait line is now owned by SamTech Trading. Work is the prior owner is on staff as a consultant.

Look for fresh supplies of the Live Jig coming soon to your tackle store. But keep your hands off the 2.5 and 3.5 oz black / chrome Kudako models. I call first dibs!   :smt001

Oh thank Neptune!  I was just about to sell my kayaks and all the rest of my fishing gear off after I lost my last megabait in November...

Actually, I've rather enjoyed the quest for a decent megabait replacement and look forward to trying a few new jigs out this year.  But it's nice to know that old reliable is going to be available again.

scwafish, maybe as a challenge, you could try to fish a whole season without a megabait,  :smt004.

I am seeing a series of posts, "scwafish megabait live jig-less adventures". could be good!

I like the 6.5oz Live Jig for big ling.I switch out the sawash hook for a 4/0 bronze treble and squirt Pro-cure sardine or squid oil on it.If you want to go lighter, the 3.5 and 4.5 live Jigs will also work. The colors don't seem to make that much of a difference, but sardine and silver(blue or black back) produce well in the Monterey Bay.On more overcast days the purple mack color seems to work well.

Some guys will tell you to rig them with assist hooks (ala Shimano Butterfly jig) because they don't get hung up on the bottom as much.IMO the hooks flutter above the jig on the drop too much and I've missed too many fish in the drop that way.I like the bronze trebles because the hooks will bend if you get hung up on the bottom (not out of the lings mouth) and can be replaced or bent back and sharpened easily.

Megabait also makes a great swimbait called the LA Slider, good hairraiser-type jigs and I like the heads of their fat swimbaits.Come to think of it, I don't think Megabait makes a lure I don't really like. :smt003

I have hooked two halibut on a 3.5 oz live jig, cabezon, and tons of rockfish.

that one I had a gamakatsu 1/0 510 assist hook as the only hook on the tail.

mooch dubbed it the 'bleeding tail' mod,  :smt023

easy to unhook those blues, grab the shrink wrap on the hook and flip them off.
and it seems to float point up so that I was able
to fish that thing until the paint is flaking off and I still have it.

but my lings have come on other lures so far, especially a 7" swimbait.

so I think of the live jig as a great jig for lots of fish, but not necessarily the
lings although I have yet to try the larger live jigs.

Thnx for your insights and details.I will be attempting my first ling/rock hunt this season and was wondering what the favorite was.

I've got the lead-hd swimbaits and will have to use em' up first and will probably get HOOK'd and go buy ALL of the rock necessities. :smt012

I want to try a trolling rig that is a big (8") grub with a giant siwash through it on a threeway swivel with a big heavy
weight like 1lb. or even two big grubs.
