Hey Everyone,

I am looking to get into crab fishing when the season starts and am looking around craigslist. This one guy is selling his crab square boxes for $20, all rigged up. Seems like a great deal!

Question is, are crab rings better or do the square boxes perform okay? I can visualize a crab square box hitting a rocky seafloor and tilting into a bad angle where no crabs can get in. While a crab ring will settle snug into the bottom and expose the bait boxes. Am I crazy to think this?

Looking to go out crabbing for dungeness at Baker Beach. I've researched Doran as well but don't know if the bottoms at these beaches are sandy or rocky? Do dungeness crab hang out in sandy bottoms or rocky?

Thanks in advance!
Kevin

If you want dungeness crabs you need sandy bottoms. Be careful buying on Craigslist. The regs changed for next season. The traps may need alteration to meet the new regs.

Danielson's are $20 each from the store, not rigged up.  If you can get them rigged up with rope, weights, etc.....that's a good deal to me.

Rings are more common for shorter soaks or just to see if there are crab around go with the boxes on sandy bottoms... :smt006

good call guys, thanks!

I checked out what the heck the destruct device was and found this photo. Can't get my head wrapped around how to adjust the square trap to abide by this rule

The boxes are best for longer soaks, Rings for shorter soaks. If you want to keep moving and checking the traps, I would say go with rings or the ambush made by promar.

sweet. thanks everyone!

I think I'm going to go with the ring style, since the regulations seem very fickle. Still trying to piece all my gear together and will keep you guys updates.

By the way, this is the best community I've found and really appreciate everyone's help. There is so much info browsing through these forums and just a wealth of knowledge being spread around. Hope to meet some of you guys soon. Be safe and have fun!  :smt001
