On Sunday I was out fishing / sailing in HMB harbor. I went out to green / red can area and found something peculiar about the commercial boats in the area.

Approximately five times with different commercial boats each time, I would be sailing in a straight line and they would start moving (long after I was moving) and drive straight for me.

At first I thought nothing of it but I would move past them and they would literally turn towards me then turn out of my way 300' away from me.

They even did this while I was floating and fishing. I was perplexed. At no time did I start sailing/pedaling in their path or even approach them. Given that two of those times the commercial boat course corrected to drive directly at me I can't really think of it as a coincidence.

Anyone have experience like that at HMB? It kind of tripped me out.

You mentioned you were by the green/red can. Could it be that they were just following navigation routes?

i noticed this too, but they didn't get too close to me.  they seemed to be doing big ovals just west of the south reef.  after hearing all the noise they were making, i decided to troll inside closer to shore on the way back in.

Yeah there are boat lanes they got to follow when entering and exiting the harbor I think.  I try to stay away from the boat lanes if possible. Commercials tend to just "Yell" and "Cuss" at us and say the saw a GWS hanging around the area, but those are the "Special" ones, that I tend to ignore. Most are good people just trying to make a buck, so i stay out of their way.

Yeah that's actually exactly where it happened. Maybe it was just a coincidence. I was wondering if I pissed the commercial fleet off somehow and didn't hear someone yelling at me. Wouldn't be the first time. But your explanation seems to fit what happened well.

Yeah I tend to steer clear of the harbor entrance/exit, I didn't have problems going in and out. It was when I was well out of the harbor in that area circled on the map I started running into issues.

If a commercial has six lines set and is making tacks along fishy areas but needs to change direction because of high spots that all that trolling gear won't clear might explain why they seem to be tacking toward you.

Human and wind powered craft have right-of-way, but sometimes there is neither need nor wisdom in asserting it.
Warning! Retiree; Knows it all and has plenty of time to tell you about it.

Yeah I'm not stupid enough to challenge a commercial boat for right of way. My problem was i kept trying to get *out* of their way and they kept getting in my way lol.
