http://www.tackledirect.com/shimanotvc70ml.html

My current rod for bigger fish is a tiger stick 7' with MH action, it also has a reel that does not let go of the braid line when I drop it down, this has always been an issue for me, I always have to pull the line out :(

Anyway, I heard for when I am ready to Salmon fish on the river I need something with light action. I want to jig for them. I chose this rod http://www.tackledirect.com/shimanotvc70ml.htm (the price seems decent 129, but I'm worried about the length of 7ft)  and bought this reel https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010MAVO0M/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

For line should I use braid or mono? lbs?

Do this reel and rod seem like a good choice? Any suggestions on a rod?

Thanks!

The trevala id definitely a good rod for RFs.  I had the tvc 66 mh and really liked it.  Don't know much about using it to jig for river salmon though.
Don't know much about the reel too.

I don't know the rod, but it's a saltwater-series rod and might be less flexible than a medium-light action freshwater rod.

The right rod kind of depends on the river.  If you're fishing above a fast current, too light a rod won't help you turn the fish if it runs downstream, but a rod too heavy might disguise a light bite.

My favorite river rod is as stiff as a 2X4 for three quarters of its length, then light at the tip.  It'll turn a fish running downstream, but is still sensitive enough to feel a very light bite.  Just my opinion.

I don't know the reel, but braided lines were developed for spinning reels.  They work with level wind and baitcasting reels, but some people say they tend to dig in and jam on those reels.  A good, round, braid is often less prone to digging-in than the more flat and ribbon-like braids.  I use Fireline and have had no issues with it - it's a very round braid.

Good luck and get some salmon.

The Trevala is by far, one of the best rods out there. Way better than the Tiger in my opinion. My son and I have two of the 7 foot ML. Great rod. The weight makes a huge difference, and those rods can handle Salmon no problem.

If you want to fish with mono, don't get the Trevala... Period.

That said, I have that same 7' ML Trevala. It'll handle a river salmon just fine. It's a great all-around rod for West Coast fishing.

Trevala would be a great choice, personally I have been using my bass setups for river Salmon. When I first started catching Salmon I was using a heavier setup but now I feel much more comfortable using my heavier bass rods/reels.

As for your reel issue, it sounds like you have the break cranked down too tight you can try loosening that up to see if it helps.

I use braided line to a copolymer leader, sometimes I use fluorocarbon but unless you have your drag set correctly when salmon turn and run they will snap the line without much effort the copolymer has some stretch to it and for jigging works very well for me.

Never using a KastKing reel I can't provide any real recommendations but based on the claimed stats it should be fine has good drag rating. Like I said above I use my bass reels "Revo Premier" and even used a "lexa 100 HSL"

+1.  This rod kind of sucks with mono, I think it was designed to be used with braid.

Tinker...a bit lost on what you're talking about.  What flat ribbon like braids have you seen in the past?  Last I checked, fishing line was round, not flat.  Maybe it was before my time??   :smt044

Power Pro and Sufix 832 have profiles that are more oval than round, and Power Pro Super 8 Slick is very flat.  I haven't personally used others, but I've spooled up these three.

Lines like Fireline, Samurai, and Smackdown are almost as round as mono.  I believe the new Trilene braid is advertised for it's "roundness".

I don't have problems with braided lines, but people who are not me often whine about them digging in on casting reels.

I have had some issues in the past with braid digging in on my reels.  less of an issue if you're jigging but can definitely be a problem if you do a lot of casting.

I whine about it  :smt001

Fishing green bass, anything under 65lb will dig in on itself.  Usually happens anytime you pull the line tighter than usual, like: setting the hook, pulling through weeds, stuck on a rock etc.  Next thing you know you chuck a bait and the bait is stopped mid flight and springs back at you.  Doesn't bird nest but you still look like a kook.

Call me old school but for salmon its always mono for me.

That rod will work just fine. I don't know if it's the best rod for the job, but it will certainly work. My trevalas have held up very well over time, and I use them all the time.

I prefer braid... for everything. I like to spool the entire reel with 30-60 lb braid, and just leave it on their for years (trimming out abraded sections every once in a while). I typically run a mono or fluoro topshot for river salmon.

VK is right about braid. The only times I have had the line dig in is when I have revently spooled it. Keep some tension on it when you spool it, and be careful with a snag when fishing a fresh spool of braid.

Wow thanks guys! That's a lot of good information. I'll post a review of Kast King Reel when I get it out in the salt and freshwater a few times. As for the Trevala I think I'll be very happy with it, as an all around rod! I like my Tiger rod but it's just too heavy and I can barely feel the bite.

VK thangs for the advice on tying uni knots and rod fundamentals. My radio died the other day, so I wasn't able to check back with u on the water. Hope you got something! Wait you did a 3 foot Lepord!  I skunk all three times I went out! I did see some guy catch a thresher shark and it kept jumping out of the water!

Good to re - meet you Steph . We tried radio contact with you and paddled around looking for you after we did not hear from you , eventually we paddled towards the launch and saw you loading up .

Suggestion : if your radio is dying let someone OTW know ; a least we know your situation and can keep a visual contact going .

As for the info on rod and reels ; what I know you could fit in a thimble there are lots good people with sound outstanding knowledge here .

Just glad to pass what I learn along .
