My buddies and I are taking annual trip up to Tahoe and they decided to rent a boat for one of the days.  They asked me to bring some fishing gear so they can fish, but I have no idea what to target this time of year and what type of gear I should bring.  I know when its colder people are targeting macks.  More specifically, we will be in South Tahoe near Zephyr Cove area.

Based on the little research I did today, it looks like there's some bass in the lake, but the information wasn't specific to which part of the lake.  For those of you that fish Tahoe regularly, any advice on what to try targeting this time of year would be greatly appreciated.  I don't want to take all my tackle boxes!   :smt044

Thanks in advance!

The bass will really only be catchable in the Keys.

Macks bite all year round.  Assuming your rental boat doesn't have downriggers, you need a fishfinder and go look for them on the sounder.  I haven't heard much about kokanee yet but they should be biting soon off Baldwin Beach.  You can jig them up too.  Limit is 5 fish total, of which two can be mackinaw.

If you can't troll, I would bring:
Jigs - P line style 1 - 4 oz smothered with pro cure
that's it.  that's all i ever fish there if i'm not trolling.

I would also bring a minnow trap and try to catch some lahontan redside minnows. best place to set the minnow trap is in emerald bay in like 30feet of water. Tip your jig with the minnows and drop it down on the fish.

On your fishfinder, you should be looking for underwater humps (most of those you can identify on your GPS mapping software).  any rise of 30 feet or more off the bottom should hold mackinaw, total water depth of 100-250 feet, picking the right size jig for a vertical orientation.  Small, smooth pops of the jig.  If the kokanee are around near baldwin, they'll school up from 60-100ft of water and the macks will be underneath them.  so jig above or in the schools for koks, and under them for mackinaw.

Fish the keys for bass. Someone introduced the bass to the Tahoe keys a few years back. Heard of of double digit or 2 swimming the keys.

I may be hitting it next week depending on a few factors. I'll let you know how it goes if I do. For the easiest mac fishing make sure you are on the water early. Once the sun hits the water it gets a little more difficult to get bit.
