Good news is I should get some WAF back when I make salmon dinner tomorrow ~  :smt002

With the prospect of a relatively slow day at work 'catching up' on neglected files, and the ocean at the end run of a flat stretch with a bite happening at the Cove, I had to go again!   :smt001

The forecast was south wind 5-10 building to 10-20 in the afternoon and low swell.  I pulled up around 11:20 to see a bit of chop on the water, mostly cloudy skies, and a few boats out north of the whistle.  I geared up quickly and headed straight out toward the whistle.  Radio talk was slow but there were a few hits by two boats up off of abalone point.  The wind was 5-8 from the south and I felt it could build at any time.  I decided to hang close to the whistle rather than go north and have the south wind come up.  Eventually there were 3 powerboats right around me just north and east of the whistle like yesterday, with a couple that had left too.  I had seen 3 fish caught when I finally hooked up.  One of the powerboats with 3 guys who'd scored a nice one by me was right there and they cheered me on.  I went to net it and it went under the boat so I dropped the net to try and regain control of the fish.  The net goes floating off and I have to play the fish with one hand on the rod and one hand paddling over real quick to my net.  The fish was well hooked, so it worked out, and the three guys in the nearby powerboat got some great entertainment!  People were hitting on RSK's 30 and 40 feet down, black and gray Apex 15-20 feet down, and I had same as yesterday:  big red DeepSix, silver flasher, greenish hoochie and double hook rig with a chovie - 24-30 pulls today.  I continued trolling and managed to bag my limit right at the 2.5 hour mark.  Today's fish were a bit smaller than yesterdays:  7 pound 13 ounce and 8 pound 1 ounce.

Yes, Etienne, I need a 12-step program for my fishaholism!   :smt003

I am green with envy.  Nice work.  The pending inclimate weather will allow you to rebuild your WAF account.  I am thiking I may be able to get up there agian in July.  My wife has a conference in Portland and will take Natalie to the inlaws so I may be free for more Shelter Cove action.  I will keep you informed.

Hey Erik...you suck!

Jeez, leave some salmon in the ocean for the rest of us.  :smt005
Its only March 7th and you've already got 3 salmon!

So you were pulling a green hoochie huh? Hmmmm...might have to buy a few of those.

Thanks for the great report(s) and pics!

See ya in a month!

Thanks for the nice thoughts, guys.  The silver lining to this since I've had some luck is that I will feel so much more inclined to guide and help when I do have others to fish with again.  Catching salmon and being out there solo (with some powerboats) is an awesome feeling, but being out there as "the pack" that Hawk so aptly described was also a great feeling and one that I want more of.  July is a great month for salmon, rockfish, good weather and flat water in general, but abalone season is closed for July.

Again, whenever anyone wants to come up I'll try to get together.   :smt001

Yeah,
I'm thinking about hitting it mid-May or early-June.

Here's the wish-list:
2 salmon
7 rockfish
1 cabezon
2 lingcod
2 halibut
3 abs
10 crabs

That, my friends, is The Grand Slam!
Heck, I'll even settle for just 1 halibut (as long as its a Pacific!)

And I totally agree with the "pack" idea. That was pretty cool when we had 4 or 5 of us lined up, trolling along in the same direction, keeping the same distance from each other. That was sweet!

Well done!   I am soooo jealous.  I just checked Mapquest and it said I can be there in 4 hours and 37 minutes.  Humm, I do have next week off and a small "honey do" list.  Maybe just maybe!!

That forecast looks a bit marginal, Z.  I'd wait for something less than 8' swells and preferably from the north vs. west - that can make a big difference at the Cove.  However, it may be do-able, you just never know.  Regarding my promise to hookup, I CAN'T do it this weekend!  I'm hoping I can get some good remodeling work done on my house and build WAF for the rest of the month...  Be sure to get in touch though, if you're coming my way, because I may be able to sneak out!   :smt004

Do you know how far I'm gonna have to paddle to (have a chance to) catch a salmon in Monterey?!
MILES!

I'm just jealous they're so accessable at The Cove....
