Next question:  Our coast is windy, so for a 16' 'yak, what's a good sized drift chute?

As big as you feel comfortable with. Get one designed for a boat if you really want it to work. I ordered one from a kayak shop years ago that was pretty big, 30". They shipped a smaller one ( maybe 22") and said the other was not available anymore. Wish I would have sent it back and went to a boat store. If you want to really have it work well I would say 5-6'. Put it on an anchor trolley and quick release too with a float. If you are tied to it and something goes wrong you can let it go quickly.

And double line it.  One line tied to the back of the chute.  When you retrieve, you pull the back line and it collapses the chute so it's super easy to haul in. New had an 8' chute on our boat and that's how we ran it as is the custom.

Drift chutes can REALLY yank on your boat when it gets windy and choppy. Make sure you attach it to something strong.

Uhh, don't you have a Hobie?  :smt005  Drift chutes are for paddle yaks...and even when paddling, I haven't used my chute for years. I think it's a 38" cabelas brand. You can have it for $20 if you want it.

CenCoast is right, I've never had to use a drift chute on the Hobie.

Just do a slow pedal to or against the direction you're drifting.
The drift chute is just another gadget/item that can get tackled with your yak.
