Im looking for a quick trip to the ocean from Sacramento. Somewhere the wife and I can try ocean kayaking for the first time on rental boats. Decent inexpensive hotel for the night would be nice too!

Don't plan on hitting the ocean for the first time any time soon.
Small craft advisory in place through Monday and pretty decent swells with a mixed sea pretty much through the week.
Not good at all for the first time on the ocean.
October is usually the best month for calmer conditions.

You might consider Tomales Bay. Inverness has rentals as does Marshall. Both places are a bit more protected than Hog Island. Nice shoreline views. Tomales is a beautiful bay.
